Just drag the terrain.png into your minecraft.jar (for macs) and your all set.
I DO NOT USE THIS WHEN I AM ON SERVERS AND I DONT RECOMMEND SUCH.
This has been done tens, hundreds, thousands of times. Its not original. Just look up X-Ray. You'll get plenty of results. And if you don't recommend using it on multiplayer, why use it on singleplayer? Does the fact that other people aren't playing with you change the fact that it is cheating? No.

^^ Also... people use TooManyItems or creative if the want to build, not xray textures/mods.
