A now barren, lifeless void from whence it all began
Though a ray of hope shines from the sun
Reaper and Righteous depart this dark night

Here's what I'd do if I were you. Go to the bin folder where your currently modded minecraft.jar is (%appdata%/.minecraft/bin), and ctrl-x (cut) it and move it to somewhere NOT in the minecraft directory, for example, "my documents". then clear the bin folder.
Then open minecraft, it will download the files again fresh.

Now download optifine (not multithreaded as it has many issues still), and open it with whatever .zip software you use. Also open the minecraft.jar with the .zip software. In the minecraft.jar, delete the folder called "META INF". Then copy the files from the optifine.zip into the minecraft.jar, run minecraft, and there are a *bunch* of settings you can mess with to improve performance.
