No problem with the signature support. This T.P. deserves it!
That said, I started writing down my ideas as I remembered them, and came up with some new ones as well on top of that. I dont want to step on your toes however, this T.P. is incredible the way it is, and I dont want to make you feel as if I'm correcting or criticizing you, so, if you'd like to hear my ideas let me know and I'll spill the beans.
Please do tell! When I release my personal texture pack I won't be taking suggestions because it's made for me. But this one is made to share, so all ideas are very welcome.
In addition, I have a few questions.
1)What was the inspiration for turning an exploding creature of devastation and woe (creeper?) into yoshi?
Since Yoshi is such an integral and iconic character in the game, I knew I wanted to use it as a mob. In terms of shape, the creeper is physically the closest you can get to a Yoshi, so the texture was a bit easier to map out. Worked nicely for the orange dino horns on his back, too.
2)I noticed you changed the break pattern for blocks. But I fail to see what the new pattern is supposed to be? Is it some shape from the game that I'm not remembering, or simply failing to see? Or is it just changed for the purpose of keeping things interesting?
You're correct, it's not supposed to be anything from the game. I just didn't want to use a default texture for something so frequently seen, so I switched it up a bit.
Edit: Btw the change to the iron ore block was right on point. Its now just as easy to see as any of the other ore blocks. smell that? smells like success!
Please do tell! When I release my personal texture pack I won't be taking suggestions because it's made for me. But this one is made to share, so all ideas are very welcome.
1)Armor Icons: You've changed the armor icons to match the new sprite\skin of plumbers overalls. I think this is a good change, and love how Steve looks like Mario now, but you've also changed the NO ARMOR icon to a transparent version of the previously mentioned picture. Why? if its transparent, that means depending on the object behind the icons at the time, its hard to see\tell if its filled in or not. Why not just black them out entirely? It would certainly remove the possibility of confusion.
2)I'm aware that your currently basing this theme solely off of Super Mario World, so this is a shot in the dark, but wolves currently have no skin, and we all know the Dog of Mario is Chain Chomp. No, sadly Chain Chomp does not make an appearance in Super Mario World, but if you like the idea enough, I wanted to throw it out there in case you make this one exception. Having a pet Chain Chomp in Mine\Super Mario Craft would be EPIC.
3)You've mentioned in a previous post that you feel the Dry Bones skin on the Skeletons is, for lack of a better term, sloppy. (you didn't use that word no, but you did express mixed feelings about it if I've gathered correctly) I was browsing through the Super Mario World (hereafter SMW) mobs and think I've found a better match. Why not make Skeletons Magikoopas? The skin would make more sense, as Magikoopas have ranged attacks. And this also opens up the option of perhaps changing the bow to the magic wand. It might look better than the Bill Blaster\ might not. But its an idea. And if so, this would free up the Bill Blaster skin for Dispensers, which makes a HECK of a lot of sense if you ask me.
4)My next topic is spun off of the last one, see, if you turn the Skeletons into MagiKoopas, this frees up the Dry Bones skin for Zombies, which if you ask me is a MUCH, MUCH, better fit. Dry Bones dont shoot, they just blindly walk up and hit you, much like a Zombie. OR You could skin Zombies into Chargin Chucks, who also blindly walk\charge into you for an attack.
5)Variety is the spice of life, and making creepers into Ba-Bombs was a no brainer. Making them into Yoshis was creative, and additionally opens up even more options. IE: Multi-colored yoshis. I forget, at this moment, how many colors Yoshi could turn into, but it was at least three or four. Why not make a creeper skin for each color? Mix it up. Save the Blue Yoshi for the Charged Creeper(Lightning Creeper) of course. :happy.gif:
6)You seem to have deliberatly changed cobblestone to look more like regular stone. While I initially thought this was an awesome change because sometimes cobblestone clashes horribly, I thought it over, and realized that perhaps it wasn't such a good idea. Mostly because lots of players use cobblestone BECAUSE it stands out, for things such as paths through caves to specific destinations, or to simply mark an area in one way or another, or to notice a dungeon that they have yet to hear for whatever reason, things like that. Should they be changed? I'm not sure. But its food for thought.
So what do ya think? Thats what I've come up with so far. I'll continue brainstorming as I play and see if I cant come up with some other ideas. Gotta skin cows and pigs, thats for sure, still thinking of what mobs would be best. The SMW feel is from the unbroken chain of SMW images, and seeing things that just arn't in SMW somewhat taints the feeling if you know what I mean. Hit Me Back!
7)Cows were at first a difficult topic as there isnt much in Mario shaped like a cow. Then I thought more along the lines of what cows are like in Minecraft, one of the only mobs (The Only Mob?) to take up a 2x1 block space, thats two long, one wide. Well that settles it quick. Cows are Wigglers.
8)Pigs could be Bony Beetles. They could actually be quite a few things, but Bonies seemed best, thoughts?
9)Zombies, if not Dry Bones or Chargin Chucks (from previous idea in this post) could also be Rexes.
10)Zombie Pigman could also be Rexes if not the normal Zombies. However, they could also be Mecha-Koopas, which if you ask me is a much better fit due to the Mecha-Koopas being a boss element mob, and the Nether is kinda like a boss element area. (Sure, there is the End Zone, but we'll leave that be for now I think, I havent even started thinking about what to do with Enderman, one thing at a time.)
11)Wolves, if not the previously mentioned Chain Chomp, could definitly be Dino Rhinos.
12)I have yet to see a Blaze with your T.P. loaded, but if they are currently unskinned, then there is really only one choice for them. The Podoboo.
1)Armor Icons: You've changed the armor icons to match the new sprite\skin of plumbers overalls. I think this is a good change, and love how Steve looks like Mario now, but you've also changed the NO ARMOR icon to a transparent version of the previously mentioned picture. It would certainly remove the possibility of confusion.
Hmm, I'll have to take a look at this in-game to see if it can be improved.
I think I'll consider it, if only because not many mobs are skinned. I'm not sure how well a chain chomp texture will map to the wolf's body, though.
It might look better than the Bill Blaster\ might not. But its an idea. And if so, this would free up the Bill Blaster skin for Dispensers, which makes a HECK of a lot of sense if you ask me.
Dang, good ideas that conflict. If I do change the dispenser skin to be the blaster, I'll most surely want to keep arrows as bullet bills for maximum consistency. Also, not sure if I mentioned it earlier in the thread or not, but the launcher and furnace share a side texture in terrain.png. That's most of the motivation for making them they way they are now, as I didn't want to have to deal with making the furnace work with a Bill Blaster side.
As for the magikoopas, I'd even be fine with changing the skin to be magikoopa and letting it keep the bow/blaster. The current Dry Bones skin isn't very distinguishable from the original.
Hm, interesting. I'd need to change up the Dry Bones texture to avoid people confusing it with skeletons.
On that note, I've been wanting to use those goofy flattening purple dinosaurs (no internet access as I type this, so I can't find their names) as a third skin for the creeper, since I don't think it would map to any other mob well. I'll have motivation to work on this now that you've given me other ideas to mess with at the same time. (increases efficiency a lot)
5)Variety is the spice of life, and making creepers into Ba-Bombs was a no brainer. Making them into Yoshis was creative, and additionally opens up even more options. IE: Multi-colored yoshis. Save the Blue Yoshi for the Charged Creeper(Lightning Creeper) of course. :happy.gif:
Hah, fantastic. Might not even need that purple thing. (I was unaware the charged/primed/EVIL creeper could get a different skin (if that's true). I'll look into it. Also, layered parentheses ftw.)
Thanks for the outside opinion. The way I use cobblestone isn't like this at all, so it fit my uses rather well. I'll see if I can't make it live up to both standards by making it a bit more like the default pack by adding more defined cracks/seams in the stone.
My thoughts exactly, from the beginning I've wished for a wider variety of mobs in SMW to make this easier. Drat you for giving me more work to do. On the other hand, you've now become my super-best-friend, and I'm surprised that anybody would be willing to dedicate this sort of time to a pack that isn't their own.
Pretty sure I've been there, along with a plethora of other sites to gather sprites. I found a couple good sheets full of all the enemies. If I remember, I'll edit this last bit once the internet is up and link you to them.
(Image here)
While I'm up and working, I'll definitely take the time to fix up some of the armours. The Mario-outfit one (gold or leather armour, I believe) was made to look good, but I just quickly recolored the other materials based on it and some of them look a bit nasty. One should be Luigi-themed for sure, and I think the others will probably just draw inspiration from other iconic Mario characters. (If I'm feeling especially artsy, I might make one of them a toad costume.
You know, that might even work. They have a fully-formed face which would be easy to get on a cow, and even feet. I'll give it a shot.
8)Pigs could be Bony Beetles. They could actually be quite a few things, but Bonies seemed best, thoughts?
I'm very wary of this, especially after trying to map the Buzzy Beetle to a spider. I think the shell was most of the difficulty, not to mention the legs of the spider that still shade. I actually think that a pig would be better suited to the Goomba, which is a rounder shape in this game. It doesn't have a shell to worry about and the colors suit a pig well.
9)Zombies, if not Dry Bones or Chargin Chucks (from previous idea in this post) could also be Rexes.
Indeed so. I'll look into this after messing with the creepers and Yoshi skins. By the way, what is your opinion on the smiling Yoshi skin for the creepers? I thought it was a way to keep the Yoshi shape/feel while making just a tad more sinister.
GOD.DAMN.ENDERMEN. If they weren't such a weird shape there wouldn't be this difficulty in skinning them to a theme. Mecha-koopas might look bad on a human skin, so I'll use it only if the character is obvious enough that it doesn't always need to be explained.
11)Wolves, if not the previously mentioned Chain Chomp, could definitly be Dino Rhinos.
This has potential, yes. Especially the baby ones. I think I'd try this before attempting a chain chomp.
12)I have yet to see a Blaze with your T.P. loaded, but if they are currently unskinned, then there is really only one choice for them. The Podoboo.
I agree, this should work pretty well. The rods will be a bit funny, but I think I can handle it.
On that note, I'm going to scour the games to try to find different particle effects, especially for fire. I seem to recall those lava monsters making a splash when they went back into the lava, so that would make for good fire effects. I might even be able to find splashes for raindrops.
Would you mind if I did a texturepack spotlight of this? I would have al ink to this forum page.
Not at all, please please do! The only spotlights I have right now are very outdated, and I've put off doing my own even more because of some additions I have planned. Don't hesitate to mention the multiple mod updates I plan to include soon.

Goombas would be nice yes, but I'm unaware what your worried about with the Bonie Beetle, its the same shape as a pig. So how would you run into the same issues that you did with the spiders?
Indeed so. I'll look into this after messing with the creepers and Yoshi skins. By the way, what is your opinion on the smiling Yoshi skin for the creepers? I thought it was a way to keep the Yoshi shape/feel while making just a tad more sinister.
I feel the Yoshi skin fits the creepers because both Yoshi, and the Creeper, ended up being the major media icon for their respective games. Beyond that I thought it was kinda bass--akwards. Yoshi is your friend, companion, buddy, and ace in the hole. Creeper is your enemy, arch nemises, beginning and end of a bad day, ect. I will say that slapping the friendly Yoshi skin on somethings that is sooo NOT friendly was pretty awesome though. The irony is sweet.

I encourage you NOT to give up on the Chain Chomp. It could totally work. the Head block would be the Chain Chomp proper, the second block of the body (ha cows ARN'T the only one!) would be the chain of course, and the third block (where the tail would be on the wolf) would be the physical 'block' the Chain Chomp is dragging around. Depending on the angle the 'tail' is supposed to be you could change the 'block' on the Chain Chomp to a different color.

LoL @ layered parentheses. And Im not 100% sure on the Charged Creeper getting a different skin, I just know it looks different once its charged. Is this a skin, or a particle effect? I dunno.

OOOO BOY! So perhaps my agenda isnt quite pure. But who cares? This T.P. is the ****, and I've got ideas. So wth? Why not brainstorm. Muwhahahahahahaahahaaaaaaaaa!

Ok, I'll start the filming soon.I think this has got to be one of the most well done texture packs I've seen, and a spotlight for you would help both of us. There's only ONE thing I don't like. The way you did the big mushrooms,(the ones where you put bonemeal on a red mushroom)but that's the only thing close to a flaw. I would also suggest making the villager npc's toads.

Yeah, I've had the big mushroom thing mentioned a few times. They look the way they do because they're pulled pretty much directly from the giant mushroom platforms in the game, and I keep them this way for consistency only. And I suppose that NPC Toads would be better than using Toad as an armour costume, yeah.
Ender5234, I'll get back to you later, but I have work that needs to be done tonight before I can waste any more time.
Hey Egon, just call me Ender, lol. The numbers are there because CURSE retartedly combines all its forums in the same database and Ender was already taken. -.-

Addict, Egon checks his thread (this thread) pretty often. Almost every day. He mentioned recently he's a bit busy with some school stuff, so it might be a day or two until he checks back, but he seems to be a pretty reasonable guy. I'm sure if you approach him with your dilema he will work something out with you, and the two of you can contact a (Moderator\Administrator?) to sort out your issue.

I'm here! I'll take the Mario Craft discussion to PM so it doesn't clog up discussion of this texture pack.
EDIT for texture pack update:
I've got a three-day weekend this week, so I have no issues staying up extra late tonight. I'll dedicate some (probably a lot) of time to experimenting with/implementing new textures. Ender has been kind enough to spew brainstorms of every size and shape, many of which I think will work well and end up in the final final final pack.

Goombas would be nice yes, but I'm unaware what your worried about with the Bonie Beetle, its the same shape as a pig. So how would you run into the same issues that you did with the spiders?
Not quite, the Bony Beetle doesn't have a head. Most of what makes Buzzy Beetles bad for spiders is that the shadows and the red damage flashes still include the eight legs, even though they're transparent. Using a Bony Beetle for a pig would do the same because when you kill them, the head would still flash red even though it's invisible.
Agreed, and I think that because the skin fits so cleanly, I'll keep it. It only shows up for those with RandoMobs enabled, anyway.
I was saying Mecha-koopas for ZOMBIE PIGMAN not Enderman.
Yeah, I got that. The Enderman comment was a side-note of frustration because I think that even when I do make a simplified/cartoony skin for it, I'll just have to leave it with a pretty standard Enderman feel instead of skinning.
I'll try the Mecha-Koopa skin on the human-shaped characters (zombie/zombie pigmen) to see if I can make it fit well.
I can't change the tail to different colours based on the angle. Also, I can't change the shape of it, is that what you're suggesting? Even if I make most of it transparent (head is chain chomp, a line down the back is a chain) I'll get the funny shadows and shading you see on the spiders.
I had forgotten that the furnace and the dispenser share some files. Is there any way to change that?
Not without a mod, and I'm not going to include that because it'll turn off a lot of people who want an easy-to-use texture pack. I'll keep it in mind as an option later on, but I think that's unlikely.
LoL @ layered parentheses. And Im not 100% sure on the Charged Creeper getting a different skin, I just know it looks different once its charged. Is this a skin, or a particle effect? I dunno.
It's just a white overlay of the entire mob, similar to how they flash red when they take damage.
OOOO BOY! I GOT A NEW BUDDY!!! :biggrin.gif: lol, no seriously though, the more ideas I can fuel into your little creative genius you got goin here, the better the pack gets, and the better the pack gets, the more Super Mario Awesomness that gets into my little Minecraft directory. And if there's something I don't like, feel free to edit the pack the way you like it for your own uses. I wouldn't want to stop you.
I think I'm starting to understand how this works a bit better, you cant do anything about the shapes, only the colors that are displayed on the surface as such. That does make things difficult I cant argue. Pigs should still be easy, there is enough variety in Mario mobs to find SOMETHING that fits, I'm sure. I'll get back to you when I've got some ideas for them.
--
I can see better now your issues with the Chain Chomp. It's a shame, that would have been iconic.
--
It's also a shame with the furnace and dispenser using the same file (lazyness much on Mojang's part?) boy the dispenser would have made an awesome Bill Blaster. Perhaps if its just the sides (and back?) thats shared (I'm not clear on exactly what is and what isn't) you could change the sides and back to jet black, and change only the front of each the furnace and dispenser to the appropriate image?
----
As for editing things the way I like them to differ from what you've done, I'm gonna go with H*** No! See, I view something like this as art in a way, and taking someone else's painting and overlaying what you don't like with magic marker is an insult to the artist and his inspiration. You've got something pretty epic goin on here man, I'll respect it for what it is when it's all said and done with, and be glad you took the time to make our Minecraft experience that much more enjoyable. Like I said in the beginning, this T.P. is awesome, and I don't wanna step on your toes with it. My ideas are suggestions and thats about it. You've done a heck of a job as it is.

I only suggested it because I do the same with other texture packs, when I use them. If there's something that really bothers me, I swap it out for the default or fix it myself. But usually only with things I think are broken or detract from the overall feel. Kind of like the animals probably do at the moment. Tomorrow you can expect another mob or three to be skinned to remedy that.
Please do tell! When I release my personal texture pack I won't be taking suggestions because it's made for me. But this one is made to share, so all ideas are very welcome.
Since Yoshi is such an integral and iconic character in the game, I knew I wanted to use it as a mob. In terms of shape, the creeper is physically the closest you can get to a Yoshi, so the texture was a bit easier to map out. Worked nicely for the orange dino horns on his back, too.
You're correct, it's not supposed to be anything from the game. I just didn't want to use a default texture for something so frequently seen, so I switched it up a bit.
Great! Thanks for testing it for me.
<--- Finally complete!

Note, if your unaware of this website, it might be a great help!

Edit: Ok, I've come up with some more stuff.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Hmm, I'll have to take a look at this in-game to see if it can be improved.
I think I'll consider it, if only because not many mobs are skinned. I'm not sure how well a chain chomp texture will map to the wolf's body, though.
Hah, fantastic. Might not even need that purple thing. (I was unaware the charged/primed/EVIL creeper could get a different skin (if that's true). I'll look into it. Also, layered parentheses ftw.)
Thanks for the outside opinion. The way I use cobblestone isn't like this at all, so it fit my uses rather well. I'll see if I can't make it live up to both standards by making it a bit more like the default pack by adding more defined cracks/seams in the stone.

You know, that might even work. They have a fully-formed face which would be easy to get on a cow, and even feet. I'll give it a shot.
Indeed so. I'll look into this after messing with the creepers and Yoshi skins. By the way, what is your opinion on the smiling Yoshi skin for the creepers? I thought it was a way to keep the Yoshi shape/feel while making just a tad more sinister.
GOD.DAMN.ENDERMEN. If they weren't such a weird shape there wouldn't be this difficulty in skinning them to a theme. Mecha-koopas might look bad on a human skin, so I'll use it only if the character is obvious enough that it doesn't always need to be explained.
This has potential, yes. Especially the baby ones. I think I'd try this before attempting a chain chomp.

I feel the Yoshi skin fits the creepers because both Yoshi, and the Creeper, ended up being the major media icon for their respective games. Beyond that I thought it was kinda bass--akwards. Yoshi is your friend, companion, buddy, and ace in the hole. Creeper is your enemy, arch nemises, beginning and end of a bad day, ect. I will say that slapping the friendly Yoshi skin on somethings that is sooo NOT friendly was pretty awesome though. The irony is sweet.
I was saying Mecha-koopas for ZOMBIE PIGMAN not Enderman.
I had forgotten that the furnace and the dispenser share some files. Is there any way to change that?
LoL @ layered parentheses. And Im not 100% sure on the Charged Creeper getting a different skin, I just know it looks different once its charged. Is this a skin, or a particle effect? I dunno.

Please help me :sad.gif:
Addict, Egon checks his thread (this thread) pretty often. Almost every day. He mentioned recently he's a bit busy with some school stuff, so it might be a day or two until he checks back, but he seems to be a pretty reasonable guy. I'm sure if you approach him with your dilema he will work something out with you, and the two of you can contact a (Moderator\Administrator?) to sort out your issue.
Any idea when he'll be on again?

Sweeeeet, hey man, check up on the end of page 6, ive got a few posts worth of questions and discussions on our most recent topics there, lemme know what you think n stuff.
Agreed, and I think that because the skin fits so cleanly, I'll keep it. It only shows up for those with RandoMobs enabled, anyway.
I can't change the tail to different colours based on the angle. Also, I can't change the shape of it, is that what you're suggesting? Even if I make most of it transparent (head is chain chomp, a line down the back is a chain) I'll get the funny shadows and shading you see on the spiders.
Not without a mod, and I'm not going to include that because it'll turn off a lot of people who want an easy-to-use texture pack. I'll keep it in mind as an option later on, but I think that's unlikely.
It's just a white overlay of the entire mob, similar to how they flash red when they take damage.
And if there's something I don't like, feel free to edit the pack the way you like it for your own uses. I wouldn't want to stop you.

Thanks for the love!
