Why is everything white? I can't see through glass or leaves or doors!
You're using an editor that doesn't support transparency. I recommend GIMP, Paint.Net, or Photoshop.
I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4
Is it possible to have a translucent block? I seem to recall seeing some glass recolored and made translucent in a texture pack months ago, yet when I lower the opacity to anything other than 0%, it still displays as solid (100%) in game.
Exactly what are people doing to get around this problem?
From what I remember, ice is the only thing translucent, glass can only be clear or solid, so you have to do a pattern. Unless that's changed recently.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Ice, water and portals are the only "blocks" with alpha transparency. It is bugged though, if you look at ice through water, or water through ice, or portal through either, etc. the one in the background disappears.
Any other textures you use an alpha transparency on will default the pixels to opaque and generally look bad.
