There's so many 'simple/clean/smooth/flat' texture packs out there that you could make a blanket out of the terrain.pngs that covers the entire Earth. Twice. the moon can come too
This is true.
Saying it's your 'first pack' isn't an excuse, really. Before you upload a pack, you need to think to yourself, "Will other people like this?" or "Will this ever possibly compare to packs like Painterly and Doku's?"
Why would you compare packs? yours is yours, theirs is theirs. Only think of the first one, **** the other question.
Before you go uploading "SimpleCraft", take a look at this small list of facts:
1. The name "SimpleCraft" was taken a very, very long time ago so you're not allowed to use it.
Wrong. "Simplecraft" is not copyrighted, trademarked, or reserved. But yes, dont use this name MAINLY because its ****ing stupid and you can come up with something better.
2. Flat, simple, smooth, bland, whatever-you-call-them packs are generally looked down upon and tend to only get you flamed. (which is against the rules, but it happens.)
Opinions. I hate anything above 32x and/or Realistic/cut-paste texture packs. Some people only use 16x. Opinions.
3. Making a texture one or two colors just shows that you didn't try. If you truly cared about making a texture pack, you'd give it an effort and shoot to be up there with the stars! I did this with my pack and I'm pretty popular around these parts now.
Opinions. If you can get away with making a pack using only a handful of colors per block (at least three at most seven), you are an artist.
Now that you've read that, give this little guide a look:
1. Instead of making your textures flat 1-or-2 colored blobs, try to make them detailed and good-looking.
Obvious.
2. READ TUTORIALS! They're very helpful! They can teach you art methods, color selection, how to make certain types of blocks and more!
It's best to do your own research in terms of how other people perceive things, but above all, your pack is up to you. You should not follow other's guidelines.
3. Give popular texture packs a lookover, examine how they do their textures and learn. Observation can be a great learning tool!
Read Above
4. If you're going to do a simplistic pack, choose a name other than "SimpleCraft" and give it some kind of twist, for example using a similar pattern for every block.
Read above a few comments up.
5. AIM TO ACHIEVE! You should be shootin' for the stars with this. Don't just slap somethin' up that you whipped together in five minutes. Hard work pays off!
Common sense.
Good luck out there, let's see less SimpleCrafts!
But, there is a difference between "Simple" packs, and "Flat color" packs.
Actually, the name is copywrited along with the texture. Once you create something (whether it be an image, game or whatnot) it is automatically copywrited. With or without a physical license.
But, there is a difference between "Simple" packs, and "Flat color" packs.
********. Make it if you want to. If you want to, go right ahead. :tongue.gif:
This is true. Indeed it is.
Why would you compare packs? yours is yours, theirs is theirs. Only think of the first one, **** the other question. You've got a point, but this is similar to the point of aiming high.
Wrong. "Simplecraft" is not copyrighted, trademarked, or reserved. But yes, dont use this name MAINLY because its ****ing stupid and you can come up with something better. Like Slinky said, there's a license on the original 'Simplecraft', meaning you're not allowed to use the name. It is dull and unoriginal, though.
Opinions. I hate anything above 32x and/or Realistic/cut-paste texture packs. Some people only use 16x. Opinions. The keyword here was "generally". Note your use of the word "I"? >u>
Opinions. If you can get away with making a pack using only a handful of colors per block (at least three at most seven), you are an artist. It's..pretty easy, though. Most of them look the same, for that fact. (Default textures merely simplified, i.e grass just pure green with a darker green border.) If you're referring to simplistic packs, yes. Simplistic packs are badass. I'm talkin' -simple-, not simplistic. :tongue.gif:
Obvious. Most people need to be told.
It's best to do your own research in terms of how other people perceive things, but above all, your pack is up to you. You should not follow others guidelines. You've a point, but most people only make simple packs because "it's their first"/"they have no artistic experience". :tongue.gif:
Read Above Learning from other people's examples is bad? D:
Read above a few comments up. ditto
Common sense. Once again, some people need to be told. :tongue.gif:
Do you really want the mods to seriously consider splitting the forum yet again to create another sub-section for simple packs? Because that's what happened when Doku's remix thread was pinned-- they put their heads together to try to find a way to calm the public outcry against remix packs, and thus began the epic saga of our struggle to keep the forum from being torn apart. Cries for this to be pinned will only start the whole nightmare all over again.
Let this thread die, ladies and gents. We've all had our say, and there's no reason to keep rehashing the same bit of mud.

I respect thy great Steelfeathers I shall do has thou has told...
I respect thee, O great Steelfeathers. I shall do as thou hast bidden...
Fix'd. Your Old English needs a little work, buddy :smile.gif:
Not too shabby, though.
Also, before we let this thread die, I feel I should make a point. I don't even know what it is yet, it shall appear to me as I approach the bit where I actually make it :tongue.gif:
Now...
Obviously, we want to keep the forums clean and tidy, free of spam and flaming (as much as possible), as well as being a cohesive whole rather than splintered into different sections, making it even more impossible to moderate.
To this end, when we see someone flaming someone else for making a simple pack, rather than just focusing on the OP and how they can improve, tell the others what they ought to be doing, too. This will (hopefully) reduce the amount of unnecessary bumps on simple packs, allowing them to die while their makers hone their skills and then return to amaze us with their newfound skills.
Spread the word, but in a kind way. Flaming flamers and trolls gets us nowhere. Prove you're better than them in every way possible, and force them through pressure to rise above their mucky selves.
Oh, and Steel? You are a bit of a worrywart, you know that? I know it was real bad when they wanted to split the forums before, but I'm hoping they're not stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. Nobody wanted that to happen, not even Doku himself (as far as I know). he just wanted to make it clear that people were sort of stealing his textures. In my humble opinion, Doku should've taken that as a compliment more than anything (and he probably did), but he was right to stand up and draw attention to it.
Even so, the current system is lacking. not just the forum system, but the world system. We live in a world designed for those in power to squabble amongst themselves trying to please us to avoid revolt while we toil away down here... It must, and will, change eventually. Chances are, it's gonna be soon. Let's start afresh here, and make the people better... if we can accomplish that then fixing up some of society's flaws won't be far away, and everything will be much better.
Anyhow, world problems aside... Yeah, let this thread die... but make sure we all can teach everyone how to be better.
I see far too many ignorant people (easily fixed), aggressive people who tend to start flamewars (much harder to stop/fix) and trolls (difficult to reason with). Let's fix them up rather than removing them. It's like ignoring the loud kid in the room. He'll just get louder till you are forced to acknowledge him.
*phew*.
OK, wow. I never knew I was gonna write that much... wow. OK, I'm done :biggrin.gif:
My laptop lags on Dwarf Fortress, man!
So I use 2x2 and 1x1 for my laptop gaming, to help cut down on lag. I can't even run the default 16x at above 15fps even with Optifine. It may be a placebo, but I think that 1x1 runs faster, I usually get about 30 FPS. I mean, yes, there are TOO many 1x1s, but, hey, variety is nice. Who really cares if there's a lot of them? Thanks to the default forum-listy-thingy, the topics with the most recent posts are at the top, going down to the bottom with the ones that haven't been posted on in years. If it's such a bad thing to have these packs, let them die down to the bottom on their own. Have an administrator make a rule about not being allowed to bump your pack if it's under 8x8, or something similar, and let them die if they're gonna die. But really, this topic's kinda fascist. "YOUR ART IS NO GOOD, YOUR ART NOT BE HERE!" I mean, I love you, Mirror. You're mah favorite-ever-ever-everever-on-this-forum-ever, thanks to your work on Resonance!. But really, you should just try to be a teeny bit more open minded and work towards a compromise. I mean, with your logic, collaboration packs should be disallowed due to the fact of it not requiring any talent to make, just mixing custom textures, even if it is with the owner's permission. I understand that collabs are spamming the forums, but I had to look to find a 1x1 today. Just try to compromise, I guess? Also, was this the reason you got a temp. ban?...
