There's so many 'simple/clean/smooth/flat' texture packs out there that you could make a blanket out of the terrain.pngs that covers the entire Earth. Twice. the moon can come too
Saying it's your 'first pack' isn't an excuse, really. Before you upload a pack, you need to think to yourself, "Will other people like this?" or "Will this ever possibly compare to packs like Painterly and Doku's?"
Before you go uploading "SimpleCraft", take a look at this small list of facts:
1. The name "SimpleCraft" was taken a very, very long time ago so you're not allowed to use it.
2. Flat, simple, smooth, bland, whatever-you-call-them packs are generally looked down upon and tend to only get you flamed. (which is against the rules, but it happens.)
3. Making a texture one or two colors just shows that you didn't try. If you truly cared about making a texture pack, you'd give it an effort and shoot to be up there with the stars! I did this with my pack and I'm pretty popular around these parts now.
Now that you've read that, give this little guide a look:
1. Instead of making your textures flat 1-or-2 colored blobs, try to make them detailed and good-looking.
2. READ TUTORIALS! They're very helpful! They can teach you art methods, color selection, how to make certain types of blocks and more!
3. Give popular texture packs a lookover, examine how they do their textures and learn. Observation can be a great learning tool!
4. If you're going to do a simplistic pack, choose a name other than "SimpleCraft" and give it some kind of twist, for example using a similar pattern for every block.
5. AIM TO ACHIEVE! You should be shootin' for the stars with this. Don't just slap somethin' up that you whipped together in five minutes. Hard work pays off!
Good luck out there, let's see less SimpleCrafts!

I think I agree with the idea behind this thread, and I do tend to dislike the all too common overly simplified texture packs. However, for every crappy Simple Pack/Frenden's Cartoon Pack knock off I see, there is a terrifically hideous over detailed, no attention to color dynamics 128x128 pack on the forum.
I think that what you're really asking for is for people to not make a texture pack attempt unless they're good at making texture packs. This would probably result in a lot less texture packs, which may be a good thing. But I know that every texture pack that I've hated, and there are MANY, there have been a lot of people saying they liked it... so I guess it's hard to really say that everyone shouldn't throw their hat into the ring.
Bleh, whatever. It doesn't really matter. I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to the art I make with this game in mind, so I guess I'm biased :wink.gif:
My pack, Resonance!, is my very first attempt at texturing anything Minecraft related, hell, my first attempt at pixel art. I tried. :tongue.gif:
I helped too!

I agree with you, but I would have to say that there are some exceptions to the rule. I think that these one or two color packs or the 1x1 packs are just stupid and should not be on these forums, but those who put time and effort into making a pack centered around that idea are not as you describe them. Like Splotch Block or my own.

Yes, those packs are very nice. Another great example is NorthernerSouth's Puffy Lines. What I'm talking about is horrible two-colored catastrophes.

Perhaps, but if you simply wanted people to try then you would also target this against people who put out blurry "high rez" packs that look like they just kind of threw a bunch of stuff into photoshop and applied a blur filter to make it tile better. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against people trying to do better, and I'm no fan of a grey square with three red dots in it for redstone. I just think that there are a lot of people trying to make texture packs with no real skill, but they have to fail before they can know what not to do. Just because they fail trying to make a pack with fewer colors doesn't mean they're failure is worse than someone who tried to make a pack with a lot of colors, and failed.
Mirror, you attention hog you. I'm so proud you've decided to follow in my footsteps and make waves in the community. <:.)
Although I will say that this type of thread has been posted many times before. Didn't you already make one like this? (Or am I imagining things....I do that a lot. XP)

I try to help, that's all. :tongue.gif:
Of course it's been made a million times, but apparently needs to be re-made. Dunno if I've made one before (I did make a tutorial that said "don't make a simple pack") but uhh dunno :tongue.gif:
YES! Why is this not pinned? People need to understand this! Simple packs, I make for tests of new programs, not real Texture Packs! Get this up there now! Everyone! Give this post a +1!

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Mirror, and yet it must be known that I lean on the wall of pessimism. I know that you will be ignored. Those who lack experience fail to seek it out, while those who wish to gain it are unwilling to produce the effort, a majority of the time. Unless stickied, this will be buried soon...by SimpleCraft(s). And if it is stickied, well....when did these people ever take the time to read a sticky? I think that unless the mods get serious about killing these threads before 50 people decide to join in on the fun with a "no pics, no clicks" comment (thus perpetually keeping it at the top of the stack), they shall always have a prolific existence.
I hope I don't sound as if I'm in flames; I do not seek to burn, but only tell you what my experiences have told me to be true. A mountain (of SimpleCrafts) always erodes slowly, after many years of great forces. It will take a Cataclysm to erode them with any haste, I fear.

Sorry, lol.
No, but seriously, I agree 120% with this.
If I was helpful, funny, or you just feel like it, please press the green + button, it's always appreciated.

Flame me.
Seriously tho, I can understand the need to work hard, but, as I noticed, it takes more than just effort, sadly.

Yeah, no.
Calm down, compadre, your pack actually takes an original approach! It's not just default textures painted over with two colors.
Of course it's been made a million times, but apparently needs to be re-made.
