So I downloaded the leaked copy of 1.8, and figured I would start working on a texture pack for it. The problem is, when I try to open certain png files, Gimp has problems editing them. I'm trying to replace parts of it with other colors. Say I'm editing light_normal in the environment folder. I've chosen a grey colour, and instead comes out a sickly green colour.
I've also tried de-saturating the images, which gave the error "Desaturate doe only work on RGB images".
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can edit these files?
What I did for this was just simply open a new image that's the same size as the one you're trying to edit, make the background transparent and delete the background, then copy paste it into there. Edit it to your content, then make sure to save it as "whatever.png" as the title.
Depending on your editor, you may notice that the default minecraft .pngs are in "indexed" color mode. To be able to work with them normally, most editors use the following menus: Image --> Mode --> RGB
It may or may not be different for Paint.NET but, I'm pretty sure both Photoshop and GIMP have the command under the same menus.
Yeah, have a search through the forums a bit round here. Basically, for a complete texturepack (all in-game textures replaced), you need to do your own version of all these files:
All files in the Environment, Art, Achievement, Font (optional), GUI, Item, Misc, Mob, Terrain and Title folders
AND terrain.png
particles.png pack.png (this is just an image for your pack in the selector screen) pack.txt (one or two short lines of description about your pack)
Yes, I know that. I mean, do they work in a texture pack? I believe I've heard that whatever loads the texture pack doesn't load grasscolor.png, foliagecolor.png, or watercolor.png

There is a list here:
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Texture_Packs
It includes notes of what doesn't work. I don't think water color works though.
