I am in the middle of making a texture pack and need some help. First I took the terrain.png file and edited it in microsoft paint. I made sure to save it as terrain.png after I finished. I put the file back in minecraft.jar so i could see how my textures looked, but apparently there was an error because no textures at all showed up. I have a feeling it didn't work because i din't compress the file correctly. I have plenty of backup files (I make backups almost hourly) so I don't need to worry about restoring the textures, but I do want to be able to use my custom textures. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You can't use microsoft paint. You have to use a program like Gimp (which is free) or Photoshop (which isn't). Don't ask me why, its just that way. Hope this helps!

If it IS saved as a PNG file, then I recommend zipping the file with 7-zip or winrar and putting it in the "Texturepacks" folder in ".minecraft" like you would with a normal texture pack. See if it works there.

The terrain.png should be in a zip file (in the main directory). Then the zip should go into the tex pack folder. But if the terrain is in a folder inside the zip, it wont read properly.

You don't....you make a zip file (by using 7zip or Winrar on the file), then place it in the texture pack folder of MC.

Here is the easiest way to test.
Make a folder called whatever you want (MyTexturePack is what I'll call it for sake of argument). Within that folder, place your terrain.png. Now, assuming you have winrar/ winzip, right click on terrain.png and go "Add to archive" or "create MyTexturePack.zip" or something like that. It will name the zip file whatever the name of the folder is (in this case, MyTexturePack). Place that zip file in: C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\texturepacks . If you dont have a texturepacks folder, just make it. Now when you go to Minecraft > Mods & Texture packs, it will be there. Minecraft will use default if it doesnt find images. So, even though you didnt include items.png in your zip, since it wasnt there, MC will use default.
The common error is zipping the folder, that all the files are in, when in fact, you zip the contents of that folder.
Using a folder is better. It prevents screw ups and altering default files.
