copy all the files for texture that you want to edit out of the minecraft.jar thing, then edit the ones you copied out, put them in a zip folder, and put the zip folder in the texture packs folder
assuming you're on windows, hit the windows button in the bottom left corner of your screen.
type %appdata% that takes you to your roaming folder. double click on .minecraft, go to your bin, open the minecraft.jar with a program like winrar found the file terrain.png. copy that file to where you want it and then edit it with a picture editing software like paint.net. just dont use normal paint(it sucks)
