I will have to concur with the OP, over-commercialization in the modding community of this game is a given lately. The copyright problems stem in part due to it, and in part due to the change in the forum rules. Both over-commercialization and copyright problems happen because of the game's structure as a sandbox "canvas" to work on, the easy to code on program language, and the rapid increase in popularity the title has had these last 12 months.
Many modders or artists in the community cannot acknowledge the change, since they have not been around for the time needed to witness it. Nor do they have to, they are not doing something wrong. Its inevitable. :wink.gif:
In other words, a small community can function with an honor system; a large one cannot.
While I approve of the licensing system (perhaps I have no faith in the honor system on the internet), I must say that forced (and unexpected) adf.ly links are an incredibly cheap tactic. If someone offers me only an adf.ly, I will not download their product simply based on the logic that if I like their product I will contribute. If I don't, I won't. It's like tipping at a restaurant. I don't do it simply because you tried (or didn't). I do it because you were exceptional. Something that is much more irritating that adf.ly only downloads, though, are links that send me to adf.ly without any indication. Say, for example, I click a link in a signature expecting to be sent to a thread when, in reality, I'm redirected to that thread via adf.ly. That's ****ing cheap, dirty, and dishonest. I would much rather support artists (that I like) because I chose to, not because it was shoved down my throat.

99% of people on this forum have no issue with you [us] trying to make a buck off something they [we] have put countless hours into... especially when the audience is given a choice on whether to use an ad related link or not.
What drives most of us crazy, is the "lack of effort". And there's a LOT of "lack". People here don't have sympathy for those who don't try, and you can clearly see that on the forums.
When it comes to artistic creation, artists are EXTREMELY protective of their work. They are the ones that spent the time, so when someone comes a long, without ANY effort to credit, or even ASK for permission, theyre going to get pretty pissed. You can't blame someone for protecting their work. And, if someone wants to release and open their artwork up to the public? Then so be it. It's no different than copyrighted code and open source code. Both have their place in the world.
I've been a graphic designer and illustrator for 14 years, and I've dealt with people that think they own your ****, when they don't. Trust me, you go through that, and you'll understand why I'm [we] are so protective.

Hahaha... ya tipping in the states is weird. It's because waiters and waitresses make next to nothing, so they rely on their tips, which is fine. but its totally gets abused. Where i DONT understand tipping is in places like starbucks. You didnt "serve" or "tend to my beck and call. you gave me a coffee and interacted with me for 1 minute, and you want a tip?
ok ok, i'm REALLY sidetracking the OP now. :smile.gif:
I gotta admit that when a texture pack creator doesn't put and Adf.ly link I get pretty sad for not giving him some support. Adf.ly is the best way to give 'em feedback.

Thanks for the key, Stephen!
Some people, who are cool, have two links, a download with adf.ly and a straight download link, and one says, get adf.ly if you want to support me, and all that. I like when they do that so I go to adf.ly. And if I made a texture pack I wouldn't want somebody to copy, and I don't want somebody to copy me and then put it with an adf.ly link...

I don't care about copyrighting I think its fine. However I hate people who just obsess about catching that thief and forget to update their pack.
However I HATE adfly. What ever happened to donating? I donated $5 to Ovo because I loved his pack back in version 0.3. I shouldn't be forced to give you money in order to donate your pack. It's just petty really. If I like your pack I'll actually donate money (I also buy music and buy software maybe that just says things about me). Adfly is sketchy as all hell and just bugs the crap out of me. Each time an update comes out I have to click that damn link in order to get a newer version of your pack. If the pack is unknown and I have never used it I won't even dl if it's an adfly. Leave a donate button and Ill donate, however adfly and a donate button are just silly. You're double dipping really.
The introduction of adfly has made this some type of business where people can make money. It's silly and you see these kids making like 10 packs and week with adfly links to try and make money.
Give me a donate button or get a job. Sorry but I just hate adfly.
Like I said in my "How to make a thread" tutorial, uploading a simple pack/some other persons work/some **** you threw together in five minutes and using an adf.ly link as your first link is a giant "**** you" to texture pack makers like me. It's best to only use an adf.ly link when your pack gains some popularity, and even then include an alternate direct link if they don't want to support you.
As for the copyright stuff, we have to AND we want to. I've spent around two weeks or so now working hard on my first texture pack, and it was stolen and uploaded to a texture-pack customization site a few days ago. Now, let me tell ya, this pissed me right the **** off because when someone steals your hard work, it really sucks! Like I've said before, imagine you've been spending weeks building a bike out of like, tin cans, and then someone steals it halfway through construction. Probably not the best metaphor, but it works.
tl;dr: Stealing sucks, adf.ly links should have an alternative, we're forced to copyright.

The copyrights are a good idea in my opinion I drew everything in my texturepack and I would be really pissed if someone used it calling it their own its to protect the people who create the pack from not getting their credit. Now i do understand about the copyright nazis that are like you cant use one texture blah blah. They are very annyoing.

I personally think that everyone that takes artists work WITHOUT permission, Is just too lazy to make his own, And I completly agree with degraph.
Once I'm done with my own texture pack, I will use adf.ly cause I think i deserve the few cents from every download, and once I will publish my pack to the public, I will also understand what is to protect your work.
Antil now, I didn't even finish the first line in the terrain.png and I worked about 6 hours on it.
This argument is stupid and pointless guys. The texture pack creators will do what they like with their own work, end of story. The users are privileged to use the artists work. Lets this thread die like the rest of these arguments please.

It's not double dipping.
Having both an option to donate and an ad.fly link (As well as a direct download link, preferably, but that's at the discretion of the artist.) is much more considerate to the people who do want to support the artist in question. Not everyone has ready cash they can throw at someone, or an easy way to send money over the internet (kids often don't have credit cards, for example.). An ad.fly link provides these people with additional options.
I ALWAYS use ad.fly links when provided by the artists I like. It's an easy way to show appreciation and I very much wish all the good artists would provide the option as well as a donate button.
Of course, when I see remix packs or really crappy packs (looking at you, majority of simple packs) that force people into using ad.fly links... I just laugh, roll my eyes and move on without downloading. Heck, sometimes you get retards who put their pictures under an ad.fly link. Those are generally money grabs with no real interest in producing good work or the "artist" in question has no concept of how terribly he compares to other artists on the site (special snowflake syndrome). They have the right to use ad.fly, but that doesn't mean any reasonable number of people will click the links.
