[Help] Is it possible to edit the Nether Portal texture?

I tried searching around a little bit but all I found was Portal texture packs for adventure maps and the Portal Gun mod. So is it possible to edit how the Nether Portal looks?

Like the portal textures themselves? I do believe so, it wouldn't be part of the terrain.png but would be part of things like moving water and lava... if that makes sense.

Yeah, the texture for the portal, the purple spinning blocks, not the obsidian.
