I would help if I was sure what overlay you meant. If you mean the red that covers the screen when you're in lava; make the lava texture in terrain.png more transparent. If you mean the fire texture overlay, you need to make a custom_fire.png.
If you mean a different overlay, I'm not sure what others you may be talking about.
