Searching for the default texture pack

I'm hoping to just modify a couple of things in the default texture pack, and I am wondering where within the .minecraft folder it is. Help?

A download link to the default pack would be helpful, if any of you can find one.

the default textures are in minecraft.jar in your bin folder in .minecraft
