Texture packs and FPS

I was just wondering if the higher quality texture packs[ e.g 32*32 and the 64*64] caused drops in the frames per second rate in the game.

Some of them do. I find that texture packs 128x and above start to decrease my FPS, so I stick with 64x and 32x.

they drop framerate alot! i have a 32x and my framerate dropped to half...

256x texture packs have 16 times more pixels than 16x texture packs. its like you are rendering 16 blocks in 1. thats why its laggy. one layer of one chunk (16x16) will be like rendering 256x256 blocks (16 chuncks...).

It also depends on your hardware. I don't notice FPS drop until 256x and then it goes from 150 to about 80. 512x kills my fps without optifine.
