Your profile says you live in Northwest England. In that case, I suggest Crawfords chocolate loaf cake. My personal favourite. :DI agree with the on-topic parts of your post, but I'm probably going to need it all again. It's difficult to understand in places. :mellow.gif:
Awe, just got back...I'll put it on next week's list! :smile.gif:
I've just read my post again and I find it difficult to understand in places. With not being around a lot (tonight being an exception) I guess i feel the need to cram in all my thoughts at once, expecially after reading all 24 pages in one go!! Lol
My feeling on the matter of donations is that they are like any other gift: The person who owns them is the gift-receiver. Therefore, although I know you would balk at this whole idea, you are the owner of the textures since they were donated to you by their creators. So even though you are not the creator of the content, it is still content that belongs to you.
As they were kindly 'offered' to my pack I would like to feel original content by other artists is a legitimate part of the pack or 'extras' unless otherwise requested by the artist to be removed, and I will always recognise their ownership. As regards alternative edits of my own artwork I kind of regard that as mine, but would always honestly identify the additional work of others and credit them accordingly in my 'extras' download. I have to keep things simple for sanity's sake, but I would never wish to fool people into thinking anything I hadn't done was mine.
I still have not had two concerns addressed by BlueSteelAU. One of them I mentioned already (requiring permission lists), here's the other:The rules need to include information that makes the word "licensing" not scary any more. The way to accomplish this would be to include a plain English example of a license using vocabulary an American 12-year-old would understand, since we have many of those on this forum and playing minecraft in general. But mostly because even grownups find big words scary sometimes. Hell, I confuse people constantly with my advanced vocabulary and I get scared by too many big words sometimes.
Fully agree with this. There's a delicate balancing act in progress here where artists don't wish to be ripped off, but fun and creativity mustn't be stifled. The creative sandbox fun side of Minecraft appeals to all ages and levels of understanding and I don't wish anyone to feel alienated from contributing...either by legal jargon or what they might perceive as artistic elitism. I would consider myself a professional artist in real life, but would still consider myself a 'noob' when it comes to contributing here on the forums. At my age you lot all seem to be a blur!!
I had thought that things were much improved in the texture pack section with greater mod intervention and a heightened awareness by members about permission. I'm as frightened as any honest youngster about what licensing means and what it implies with regard to any extra work that takes me away from 'creating'. At my age everything needs explaining 3 or 4 times before it sinks in...just ask my wife. :biggrin.gif:
Within reason I would assume. Steelfeathers and Glimmar are naming specific people and I will be as well, when I get around to it.
Again, I'd hate to think of this as being a legal thing, but just listing a bunch of fair minded people who I think are familar enough with my pack, to look out for it in general. Which is what I thought a lot of us already did for each other anyway. From an admin/legal point of view this might not wash if it came down to the crunch. :sad.gif:
I'm listing on my pack page who has permission to use it, and have also stated in my license that if permission is not stated in the thread, then it is void. Hopefully, this should allow the mods to lock or delete stolen content even without passing through me. Likely as not it will still go through me in most cases, but if I happen to be away, or for some other reason cannot be contacted, there is an alternative.
You and a few others I can happily and easily remember when it comes to writing a list in my OP of who has permission to use my textures, Proloe, but I worry about all the other odds and ends that I've granted permission for over the last year. I did keep all my PMs from way back, but when the forums changed I lost most of my records of who borrowed what!
I don't wish to cause anyone any needless hassle, and after being away I still have many request PM's to trawl through, but it's getting to the stage now where I'm thinking I might just have to blanket refuse any requests, at least until I get more time to absorb what's required of me by way of lists, etc. Anyone I can't remember or inadvertently forget will just have to seek permission again, and that bothers me. :sad.gif: ...I'd better put my new animated water, lava and fire work on hold and begin the paperwork instead! 1.8 update...Hah? :blink.gif:
I'm thinking that in the case of contributions made to packs, for the express use in said packs and nowhere else listed, it wouldn't have to be so in depth. All the mobs and such contributed to your pack, are "donated" art from others for your pack exressly. They wouldn't need your permission to use elsewhere, but I think no one could call dibs on them other than for your pack either.
Just how i see and understand it at least.

So..... it means i need to put license thing in my blended pack post? Cause i have no idea how to do that...
It's simple really. If your work is 100% original, all you need to do is type up a small diddy explaining the terms of use for your pack and include it in your thread's original post.
Example for a public pack:
Rules regarding use and re-distribution of my work.
My textures are open to the public and may be used and redistributed freely, as long as credit (accompanied by a link to my original texture pack thread) is provided. Without those conditions met, you are in no way allowed to redistribute any of my work.
like its stated the licence can be something that you word yourself or a pre-drawn up kit licence or a paid for licence. so long as its states how your content can be used , distributed etc... stating what licences you acquired to use others content etc... and links to those other authors content pages , be it offsite or on site..

See:
The rules seem to state that you must have an official copyright/license documentation in the post. If this is all we have to do then it doesn't change anything.. that's not how the rules are written though.. bluesteel is very direct about it.. you have to have a "license" on your download or the thread is deleted.
I removed my download links.. my threads will be for DISCUSSING my map.. if they still want to delete them so be it. I'm not "licensing" my maps. it's like licensing the engine in my car..
I state very clearly in the readme.txt in the download my "terms" and I BELIEVE in the threads I have too. If that's not good enough then I can post my work in another location.
I'm not even sure if you can copyright something made inside a game. (that's basically what you're doing when you "license" something. You're claiming copyright on it.)
guys making texture packs is a little different because it's a series of art that's external to the game. My map is a product of the game. I don't own copyright to that.. so how can I even license it?

What it actually seems is that the official licenses are used only as template licenses. You don't have to use one of these, considering you can create your own terms of use by writing something up. BluesteelAU stated this and has also clarified this to me directly.
So, if you've already got a small paragraph explaining the rules of distribution for your pack, then you're right, these new rules don't really change much. What people are mainly arguing about in this thread is the fact that it's easier to steal people's work now because of these new changes.
Basically, it would seem that if you're pack is public and all you require is credit for others to use your work, then these new rules don't make a damn difference. However, the they are threatening to delete threads that don't have terms of use stated in them. Which is the only part that bugs me, really.

Well, I hate to be kicked out of the community, but that's how I'm feeling. My work is 100% mine. I would NEVER steal someone else's work... and I kinda feel like with these new rules that I'm guilty until proven innocent, and that's no place I want to be.
When I get my latest map revisions ready I'll re-read the rules. For now I've been doing copyright research for 2 days and it isn't pretty. It's a complicated mess and I'd just assume not deal with it for something that's SUPPOSED to be fun.

It's already been stated by Blue that you can make them as simple or technical as you want. Depends on how protected you want to feel (or feel you have to be). If you think you'll ever end up in some court of law...get more technical i suppose. I wont be...not for this anyway

If anyone is wondering which admin made the rules about this the guy's name is BlueSteelAU and he's been admin for about...a week I think?
yes, we are all aware of where the ruling came from. We, the texture Pack artists, have also had a lengthy conversation with BlueSteel and several other mods and even a curse staff about this issue. If you had read the first post thoroughly you may have seen the little snippet about the situation being mostly resolved.

Oh sorry I was just telling people who weren't aware. I'm just worried because I'm making a map that uses Painterly Pack to enhance the the way the map looks. And considering I've been working on it since before the Halloween Update >.> well...this sorta concerns me.
Read the entire thread and still have no idea what a license IS,how to show that I have one,how to obtain one, how to give credit for small objects that I've used in my creations (mostly trees in my case). And considering I am a little older than the average MC user (not by much however) I am a tad concerned how this mess will look like to the younger people of this forum.
I think a step-by-step, simple guide on how to correctly license your creations would greatly help many people.
All you need is a terms and conditions section. My works have no official licensing (no creative commons or anything), they just have a simple list of rules for their use that I have set. This is enough.
Oh that's simple. Like "This map is free to use in your creations, maps, and videos as long as you give credit"? Obviously it would be more extensive but thats just a quick example.

From what I understand you need to provide the licence info from all the texture packs that you have used.
