That's where I'm planning to go. I hear a lot of people are taking their work there.
Yeah, the mods there are very responsive when someone points out a rip-off pack, but there isn't really a texture community to speak of like there is here. You post your pack...and that's it. If you're lucky you may get a few one or two word commments (like on youtube) but there isn't really any feedback and discussion. And your pack won't get bumped until you update.
I really don't like planet minecraft :smile.gif: Their picture compression is terrible ^^ and support is terrible.
I have to really span them If I want a stolen pack deleted. :smile.gif:
AMEN TO THAT. (the pic compression thing)
I've acutally never had trouble getting them to delete rip-offs.
this is the thing, They don't actually Have to Go to the forums to say that it was stolen, People can report it, Which has always been here, So it can't really change TOO much, it just means that people will have to wait a few hours to see their texture up, Which isn't a big deal, Just be patient, If people don't like this whole license system, Mojang is one to respond to the community, but trying to start protest like this isn't a good idea, It can get you in trouble, Also, Most texture artist do visit the forum, So it is OK, And most of them stop it themselves by adding copyright info,.

We're starting to get spam from new people that come in and don't read and have no clue what's going on
Yeah so I'm all for reading posts but the thread title and description makes the issue still sound valid, and there is no way in hell I'm searching through the 24 pages IF there isn't a note in the topic post stating that the issue is resolved/is being resolved.
I'm reading through it now and deleting my post, but you really shouldn't criticize people for the "spam" when really it is the responsibility of the person who posts the topic to make sure that the title and description and topic post are updated with the new information, so if he wanted the "spam" to stop he would change those things. Nobody wants to read through 24 pages of posts unless the topic states that you need to...
Wow! So little time...just like you all, but I read this to the end! :blink.gif:
Glad I did read it all or I might have just walked away and shut up shop. Thank you to all for kind of making the new ruling a little clearer and less full of dread. :smile.gif:
So, in a nutshell, hopefully what I already have in my thread blurb/OP, where I state how my pack content can be used is sufficient as a licence with a little jiggery pokery (my brain can't cope with the idea of 'real' licences and legal stuff at the moment)?
A point that concerns me...I have many items of artwork in my pack and much more in an 'extras' download that have been kindly donated to the 'Glimmar's Steampunk' thread either as edits of my own artwork or original work. All of this material has been donated within my thread. I do not seek nor do I have any content included that comes from any other thread. It would be almost impossible to track back through my thread to give individual links to every single contributor along with what they have contributed and then list it in my OP. :blink.gif:
I will have to assume it will be ok to use a statement similar to Gestank's, that proof of permission to use and distribute donated work lies within my thread. All items included in my pack are properly credited in my OP and in the downloaded zip file. All donated bits and pieces of artwork, big and small, have the contributers name attached to the file or folder within my additional 'extras' download. If anything more is necessary I will be forced to drop the extras download until I have more time to list things. I would hate to do this, but if I had to keep a list, along with links of all contributors within my thread, I'd never get any of my own work done. At the same time I'd hate to put people off offering their own alternative contributions within my thread (as long as it's original) for the benefit of all my pack users.
On second thoughts, I may just drop my 'extras' download until I am more clear on how the forum rules apply to alternative contributions. As mentioned, if provenance and proof becomes to burdensome I'd just have to stop administering all the extra stuff and leave it to users to trawl back through my thread and hope the material was still there
It will be more difficult, but I understand necessary, to list all those to who I have given permission to use the pack or parts since it's release back in October 2010. I will do my best there and hope I really don't cause problems for those who have been circumspect in asking permission.
If my thread gets locked or deleted, then so be it. I probably wouldn't resurrect it, because unlike those who have 'borrowed' stuff without asking or giving credit, I don't feel I've done anything wrong to warrant deletion. I think two weeks notice before deletion is a little short a time period, bearing in mind the vacation season. Like others have mentioned 'locking' might be a better way. I'm still a little concerned for those younger members with a proper sense of fair play who might be put off contributing something of worth to the community with all this talk of licencing and deletion. I know it kind of scares me a bit!
As real life has taken quite a hold for the foreseeable future, I'm going to assume that I can list in my OP a good number of folk on these forums who I consider as good friends to act as proxies in my abscence. These good people, many who have voiced their concerns in this thread already and who know my work I would trust to 'look out' for me if anything was mis-used. I don't quite agree that the onus on reporting of stolen artwork, etc. is down to the original artist, especially if the original artist lists those to whom he/she has given permission. Flaming and incorrect harrassment of a legit thread is a separate issue from certain members behaving responsibly and politely...like any good citizen reporting what they think to be theft.
My thanks to Proloe, steelfeathers, 42and19 and others for voicing many of my own concerns. Thanks to you too BlueSteelAU for answering concerns. I'm sure like the majority of us here you'd rather things didn't have to be this way, but such is internet life and I appreciate you trying to safeguard things for us all. Most admins have a thankless task and I don't envy your responsibility one bit. :smile.gif:
Jeez, give me a second guys! I was in the middle of updating the OP when I got called away by cake. ^^
EDIT: I'm not going to delete this thread, because I feel there is a lot of important information in here that helps to clear up some of the confusion.
Well said Glimmar, I suppose it makes sense to place the final decision on the true artist if it is indeed ripped, but The down side is that alot of old texture packs will get zapped.

I'd suggest putting all of the relevant information in the topic post so we can avoid reading all of the "LOLZ MODERATORS SUCKS BADS" posts and get to the good stuff. Either that or just list the pages with everything you feel is important.

I think this is exactly how I feel about the situation. I'm not "young" but I just don't believe in having to license my work like this. I'm not a professional artist, this is just a hobby to me. It's very off putting to me, I suppose, that some people take this so seriously that they're going to actively remove submissions that don't license their work. Most people here I'd say (this is mostly map makers..) are just average people, many of them young, that make something as a hobby/little side project and want to post a "hey look what I made!" thread.. now they have to go through licensing etc. and worry that they may have inadvertently violated a rather long list of frankly confusing rules...
I understand where yall are coming from, but I feel like this isn't going to stop the offenders, just stifle those of us who DO follow the rules and want to be very careful not to step on any toes.

Mmm! Cake!!
Absolutely agree that this should not be deleted. As mentioned above, given what life is like at the moment, if I hadn't read through this I most probably would have walked away and deleted all my work myself. Important points needed answering, most have been, but there are many artist/members who will be coming back from vacation/real life over the next few weeks for whom this will all be an initial shock.
You've got steelfeathers to thank (or curse!) that I'm still intending sticking around...well, as much as I can. :smile.gif:
Now I'm off to do the weeks shopping and cake is definately on the list! :tongue.gif:
[Impressively lucid and easy-to-read for what would otherwise be a wall of text]
My feeling on the matter of donations is that they are like any other gift: The person who owns them is the gift-receiver. Therefore, although I know you would balk at this whole idea, you are the owner of the textures since they were donated to you by their creators. So even though you are not the creator of the content, it is still content that belongs to you.
I still have not had two concerns addressed by BlueSteelAU. One of them I mentioned already (requiring permission lists), here's the other:
The rules need to include information that makes the word "licensing" not scary any more.
The way to accomplish this would be to include a plain English example of a license using vocabulary an American 12-year-old would understand, since we have many of those on this forum and playing minecraft in general. But mostly because even grownups find big words scary sometimes. Hell, I confuse people constantly with my advanced vocabulary and I get scared by too many big words sometimes.
Wait, so then can an artist make a licence and specifically states in it that he allows people other than himself to report stolen textures so that he himself doesn't have to PM a mod of viceversa?...

Within reason I would assume. Steelfeathers and Glimmar are naming specific people and I will be as well, when I get around to it.

I'm listing on my pack page who has permission to use it, and have also stated in my license that if permission is not stated in the thread, then it is void. Hopefully, this should allow the mods to lock or delete stolen content even without passing through me. Likely as not it will still go through me in most cases, but if I happen to be away, or for some other reason cannot be contacted, there is an alternative.
