So, where do I get the licencing for the original minecraft textures. I need to re post them on my thread because I am using them as place holders and I don't want my thread locked.
ok.. you are right mojang can at any time come and tell us that some packs are using their artwork to please take them down.(same with mods actually)
look on their site or contact them to be on the safe side.
that being said its like i said above its up to the original author to complain about copy infringement. if you give credit to the default pack from mojang and use their art work for your defaults and change things as you develop your pack that should be fine.
To put it another way Most 16*16 texturepacks are stemmed from the default pack. the problems arise when people work on higher texture packs such as 32*32 etc.. that things get messy like if you made your 16*16 tyexture pack from another texture pack, then they would be upset.
Also in the general rules it states the misuse of adfly (money-making links) so if you're using others texture packs without their permission to sell your works then you can't use adfly type links
Which is another reason we require that licence in there stating that you are allowed (if you are) if not your thread will be deleted.
It's not the act of putting up a license on my packs that's really getting to me. What really bothers me is that no one will protect me from theft when I go on vacation for two weeks.
It's really as simple as that. Morally, there should be a way to say 'that's stealing-- it isn't right and it needs to be stopped. Now.'

And the idea you and I and Cowed came up with would solve that problem easily. "I'm going on vacation for two weeks. These are the people who have permission to use my textures."

Ahem. Forum rules to begin are flawed, and need a restructuring. All the slacking and abusive staff should also be cut. Although I may get banned for saying it (not sure if free speech is even allowed anymore) but the way this forums is managed is ****. Someone really needs to fill a position of power, and help quide teh whole operation.

there is , the licence on your pack , they need to put it on theirs if they are using it.
If you go away for 2 weeks tell a staff member or someone else , state that in your thread and they'll act as your proxy while your away.
look nothing is perfect, we are not the police, or the law, we are like a marketplace, a store holder sets up shop here and then they have to go away its up to that store owner to leave someone in place to mind their store, it's not up to the market to ensure that your goods aren't stolen while your on a break. If someone gets caught and can be proven that they have stolen then we can act, ie: we have to ask your proxy , the guy you asked to mind your store if those goods are theirs.

"Look, I don't care if your 8 or 20. If you can't take criticism or opinions, then get off the internet." -Stronghold257
I would say that the primary problem is that the mods are inundated with reports of copyright infringement on the site, and not that we are lacking explicit licenses for our users. A person can take whatever textures he likes and slap a license on them. What we need is a clear method to keep track of derivative works, visible to forum users so they can quit rabidly clicking the report button. My icon idea from earlier would be clear and impossible to miss, but would require modding the forum. Easier probably, there could be an agreed upon convention where the original artist comments on the derivative work's topic, giving permission (licensing), which the new artist can link to directly in his first post for anyone who needs the proof.
Something like:
This texture pack is a derivative of BlueSteelCraftie, textures used with written permission.
...where the linked post would have the license posted by the original author.
If this post does not exist, then the reports come in. Hopefully a convention like that would make spotting stolen textures much easier.
Edit: concerning the issue of only the texture author being permitted to submit a report of his stolen texture, easing the load on the mods, and having clear links for ownership, should allow that rule to be rescinded. Also, if you have idiots reporting a clearly legit pack, you might want to consider removing their privilege. Just sayin.
I don't get it. What's the point of these licenses and such if we have to personally confront the thefts? If there are licenses in place, why can't other people report theft and mods use the licenses that are apparently required as the reference as to whether or not they are allowed?
Honestly, I'd rather see a set-up that doesn't require me to babysit my thread, and to hire babysitters when I'm gone. It's a texture pack I do for enjoyment, and a thread I read to keep in touch with supporters. If I need to suddenly disappear for a week I shouldn't have to let moderators know like this is a job.
I'd rather see it where we either place an open license to allow free use, or have it where we list people we have given permission to in the texture packs thread. It'd require artists to do a little more work, but at least they can work on their own schedule.

Agreed. Can't you guys compromise with us at least a little?
First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to speak to us directly for the purpose of addressing our concerns. I'm sure it wasn't fun for you to wake up, log on, and discover a shitstorm happened while you were asleep.
I would like to get your feelings on an idea several of us, myself included, have independently arrived at: Requiring proof of permission from those who share their textures. John Doe posts his texture pack, and in the same post as his download link he says "Jane Smith, Bob Jones, and Amy Johnson all have permission to use my textures for their packs BlahCraft, SomeCraft, and CraftCraft--here are links to those texture packs." That way unless the pack/person using John Doe's textures is one of those three, you know they're stolen. Consent is always determined easily and accurately when permission is clearly and blatantly given. "But they didn't say I couldn't!" is not consent, and the policy currently in place says "If and only if not no then yes" instead of "If and only if yes then yes." This has the advantages of making mods lives' much easier, making it possible to address reports from third parties with fewer headaches, and protecting texture makers who are away. Incidentally it has the community-supported aspect of "Here are some links to packs I approve of, check them out."
Your point of texture re-use makes it a lot more complicated, though. The only idea I can come up with is to make texture pack makers specify which textures are their own (a good thing anyway) and make it so that Jim Brown can only give permission for content created by Jim Brown, and Jim Brown's AnotherCraft will be required to say "The boat in AnotherCraft is from Dave White's ThatCraft, if you wish to use it you will need to contact Dave White, here's a link to his pack." Which also means the links go both ways--Dave White links to Jim Brown (Here are the people using my textures) and Jim Brown links to Dave White (Here are the people whose textures I'm using.)
It's fairly common sense, and codifies what's already good practice.
lets get started :wink.gif:
the thing about stating who and what links you've given permission to is great, but they also have to state what they got from you with either a copy or link to your licence and also beneficially where you state that you've given them permission to use whatever.
this is because if next content author gets permission from him to use his pack doesn't cover them for the content they've used from yours. if they don't link back to yours then the new content author who thinks they are doing the right thing with permission to use their artwork , in inadvertently used some of your artwork that wasn't clearly defined as being yours in their pack then throws the new content author in breach in knowingly. they may have never seen your pack , they liked the pack someone else did that you gave permission to use your stuff but they never passed on that info
in the last part you are saying the same thing as i am
Why people freak out when the word licencing comes up is beyond me. all it means is that you state what you're allowing your content to be used for , and what i can't, and what they need your permission to do, and if they have to give credit. that's it
and the creativecommons licences are a great set of templates drawn up by legal experts to cover those like you and me that aren't lawyers but want to protect their works , IF the default all rights reserved covered everything there would be no need for these licences , but it doesn't so these have been done up.
like i said before too it's not just here but in a lot of sites where you have to state licences and alike for every little bit of content,, a friend of mine does Daz3d artwork , and you should see all the hoops he has to jump though before he can post his content / pictures
Why people freak out when the word licencing comes up is beyond me. all it means is that you state what you're allowing your content to be used for , and what i can't, and what they need your permission to do, and if they have to give credit. that's it
Legal matters are scary to people. I think it would be a big help if you included in the rules "I know that sounds scary to some people, but it's really quite simple" Followed by a plain English example to show just how simple it is.
The part of the idea I mentioned that I thought would appeal to you and the other staff is the aspirin for your headache. "Jim Brown says Jack Dart stole John Doe's content. Let's see if John Doe's thread lists Jack Dart as someone who can use his content. Hmm.... Nope! Time to delete Jack Dart's thread!"
Another huge concern for many of us is this: The mods are flooded because there aren't enough mods, and several mod applications have gone unresponded-to. Please let us know what you are doing about this, as it is a root cause of this problem.

we are recruiting more mods all the time , the forum staff has just undergone (well undergoing) a major upgrade , we are adding new moderators and training them all this takes time.
but we also are revising the rules as well to make everyone's experience here more enjoyable ( including ours )
The mapping and Modding section will be undergoing a lot of changes very soon, and that to will hopefully increase the experience here for all. old areas are being revamped / re-organised , new areas are being added. we are hoping to have all this in place prior to the release of MC1.8 so that members will be able to familiarise themselves with the new structure
these rule updates are a part of this update to this section (as well as the new general posting rules yet to be posted)
Other areas may follow but Mapping and Modding being the largest is being done first (with a plan that has been developed by many members and content authors input. not just ours). no one likes change and believe me if these changes weren't necessary they wouldn't be being done

But going to a place with 1/1000000 the traffic is hardly a solution. It is a great alternate site though.
