I've run into more than a few posts from users wanting to try this, and I have also been very curious, but many of us don't have the know-how to mod minecraft to do this effectively (I have limited Java knowledge, in that I passed my AP comp sci exam, but nothing else otherwise).
I remembered something I read on the MinecraftWiki, and this is a direct quote from the 'clouds' entry:

Unlike many things in Minecraft, clouds are not procedurally generated. With a texture pack, clouds' color can be changed to anything, meaning you could have pink clouds if you so desired. The file can be resized to any size, meaning it would be possible to have a different cloud pattern each day.
Which got me to thinking; could I change the sky color by making the entire png file a color of my choice, then adding a second layer of clouds, then merging those two layers into one?
I'd love to test this theory, but I am not currently in a location where I can use my comp. and won't be for a bit, so if anyone wants to try this or already knows the answer, please report back (preferably with screens) so the question may be satisfied.
It works... kind of. It clashes with the fog which makes it seem very weird. You can see that in the bottom of the picture. It'll also affect how you'll see day/night. There won't be a black sky, only the green (or whatever color you choose).

I see...perhaps thoughtful choice of coloring + bumpmapped clouds will do better? I realise that the full 3d effect won't show even on fancy graphics now that the entire png is filled...
When I get back to my computer, I'll be playing around with this a lot.
Thank you for getting this up so quick, your contribution is very much appreciated!
Here's a better look at how the sky/fog clashes in a very weird way... I don't think this is the way to go tbh.
Again, an even better pic, thank you. Could you tell me what fog distance you ran this at, though? I realise that it probably wouldn't improve much even with no fog, but this information is still useful.
You can not change colour of sky, only clouds and fog. There is no texture for sky - yet.
You can, but with it's buried deep in the coding of the game. He wasn't trying to change the color of the sky, only suggesting a work around by adding color on a layer below the clouds on the cloud.png. As I showed, it's very weird...

It's at far render distance >.> It looks close, but the pic was taken looking towards a giant chunk loading error zone where it's just a giant pit.

I meant you can't do that in a texture pack.
And i know what he meant, but it won't work completely, only particular.

I might actually make this a goal for my very first mod, I downloaded the MCP a few weeks ago and been studying it since, now I have an actual objective to work towards (even if there is already another mod for this, it'll be good practice.) Also, I can't say I entirely expected this to work either, but a good scientist is always curious and wants to test his hypotheses... :biggrin.gif:
