I'v started working on a 256x256 pixel hd pack, but when i try to 'save for web devices' and turn it into a .png file, it says it's too big, so anyways i save it to it's folder and patch it, but when i try minecraft, it goes as the original texture pack. any ideas?
For a 256x pack you don't want to use the Save for Web & Devices option but rather just Save As.. and then a png. If you want to decrease the file size of your terrain.png you can save as a png, open the saved png in PS then go to Image->Adjustments->Posterize and set the level to about 40. This will drastically reduce filesize while not affecting the quality.
As for your other problem, I'm not sure. You sure the terrain image is saved as a png? Or if the filename is correct? If the file is "wrong" in any way the game will revert to the normal terrain map.
