Now i am just a ordinary person who plays minecraft and i wanted to make my own texture pack. i have a program called gimp and it is like paint were i can edit pictures but more advanced. i just draw the block of terrain i want to be edited (an example would be if i made a stone texture) and then i put it on the terrain.png to over lap it with my new texture. now i finished and i want to do a 32x32 texture instead of a 16x16 texture. now i cant over lap it because obviously its to big. so im not sure if it will work if i make a blank terrain and i start filling in the areas with my textures. so basically im asking instead of the terrain being a whole 256x256 if it will work if it is a whole of 512x512? and could someone tell me how i do clay i don't get the color or texture? thanks. any other good tips i will appreciate as well :)the terrain that i finished is a 16x16. see what happened was i wanted to practice so i did something super simple for the stone... and then i wanted all of the similar objects to look like that. for instance the stone, dirt, grass, and the clay is really bad. i have already started a 32x32 texture pack and it looks much better. textures always look better when your playing minecraft with them too.

Download A Texture pack with that compatible size, and just overlap that terrain.png
For Gimp:
Open up the default terrain.png
Then from the menu bar pick:
Image -> Scale Image
Change the image size to 512x512 and the Interpolation to be None then click the Scale button.
You will now have a clean copy of the default texture scaled to be 32x
