So hey guys, I'm working on an rpg style texture pack and have gotten most of the base textures done ( ores, stone, cobble, planks) but had a question on some of the extioror textures such as the grass and dirt.
For the grass: Would highlighting the blades look good such as Doku did in his pack?
For the dirt: Roots? rocks? Ive seen many dirt textures with "buldges" or highlighted areas, would that look ok?
To be quite honest, I think the extioror textures are the hardest :/
In my personal opinion, packs with "bulges" look really bad, and try not to do those.
Doing what Doku did with the grass blades COULD work, if you manage to get it right.
There's a difference between adding shading to the grass to make it look long and thick, and creating grass-shaped blocks of color like Doku did. If you want long-ish grass, you should added highlighting/shading--if you don't want it to look Doku-ish, just try to make it blend in like natural grass.
As for stone and dirt...I like having rocky (bulging) stone and dirt, so long as they look good with the theme of the pack. It really all depends on what sort of look you're going for, and whether or not you want it to be a 'building' or 'exploring' pack. Super rocky rocks and lumpy dirt looks great for adventuring, but don't do so well when trying to make stone walls for your modern abode.
