I was wanting to make one. I download the kit and everything. And just finished the first texture.
It took 5 minutes. How long would it take to finish the whole pack?
If I really put my mind to it (say 4 to 6 hours a day) I can finish up in about two weeks. If I'm trying to make it look awesome and tile well, about three weeks. Of course, you could always attempt the three-hour texture pack challenge, in which case it would only take three hours. :biggrin.gif:
It's not exactly uncommon though. Many texture packs have been around for quite some time. I started mines in September. It doesn't take that long to say... finish terrain.png, but there are a lot of graphics that you don't exactly think about at first. You've got all the mob textures, the GUI, HUD's, items and so on and so forth. Not to mention any dedicated texture pack creator may even go back and work on old stuff as they improve in skill(which happens the longer you've been working on a pack).

I guess you're right. I always just think 'terrain' when I someone mentions texture packs. So, taking everything else into account...I'd have to say a month for me. Mobs take me a really long time to do-- mostly because I do them in super high resolution. herp derp.

Also, for those texture packs still in the works... you've always got the updates that introduce new stuff that can set back progress a bit.
No seriously, it depends on what you want it to be, your own IRL circumstances, level of detail and all the pack paraphanalia, not counting any future updates.
I'm incredibly slow and painfully critical of each texture I do. I started Glimmar's pack back in August of 2010 and it's still nowhere near finished, because I easily get sidetracked building, making alternate textures and other pet projects.
Also bear in mind that as soon as you release it here, if that's your plan, your life will not be your own again on the forums and replying to posts and requests is a pleasure, but can be very time consuming.
Release it and run.....is my advice...and whatever you do don't look back! :blink.gif:

Speak for yourself. I could release a ghast that looks like Elton John and belches nuclear explosions and not get a peep from these forums.

That is so true.
Heh, even though my pack has been in the works for a long time and is now almost complete except for a few things people will still say "This looks good but I won't use it until it's done!"
