So I just got more ram and a new graphics card and my computer can finally run these higher resolution pack. whoo hooo!!1 does anyone have any suggestions on which one is the best?
I stay around 64X because basically Java can't handle higher all the time. I have a top off the line gaming computer (cause that's what I do, lol, even 2 sli video cards) and Java likes to crap out with the higher resolutions I find. Plus you don't get as dramatic a difference when going 64x to 128x as you do when going from 16x to 64x. So while you can do the higher, might not be really worth it.
If you're looking for a specific texture pack I recommend Misa's Realistic or if you like Naruto then go download my KonohaKraft texture pack :laugh.gif: both are 64x

Have you seen the difference between 128x and 256x? Java can handle 256x just fine. It sounds like your computer can't. I can get 140-350fps on 256x texture pack.
And at OP, LB Photo Realism have 64x and 128x. One of the best texture pack I have.
LB photo realism is my personal favorite texture pack. It has almost all quality options.

I think 128's have a good feel to them as long as they are not trying to be "realistic" (I don't feel that I've ever fully enjoyed a "realistic" pack).
32's and 64's tend to go pretty well and still fit with the game. I was a long time user of a 128, then recently started using a 64 which is a nice change of pace. I think what happens with higher resolution textures, is that it conflicts with the feel of the game sometimes.
As for Tarielen's bit about java crapping out on higher resolutions...Has never happened to me before or after I did a minor upgrade to my computer. I do pride myself on having a decent system, so it may just be that I was always over the curve. A *big* factor in Minecraft's performance is whether you are running 32bit or 64bit.
What I mean, is if you have a 64bit operating system, and are running java in 32bit then you are going to have *loads* of problems. I had a few black screen issues, and some instability issues before I realized that and went and installed the 64 version.
Minecraft is quite a demanding game, which many people find surprising (have yet to find a laptop that can run it efficiently...then again all the laptops I have are kind of mediocre with the sole intent being a work related thing...) If your computer is sub-par then it probably will have trouble in some situations, especially with higher resolution texture packs.

Edit: LB Photo Realism is "okay" in my opinion. I have trouble looking at some things at a distance, it looks.....hard to explain. Prime example of my opinion on "realistic" packs, if anyone else knows what I mean.

I've seen the difference between 128x and 256x as well and my computer can handle it fine. I've used LB Photo Realism as well, looks gorgeous, but after a few hours of playing (and I mean hours, it's not like it's constantly crashing as soon as I open it, perhaps I'm a little too addicted) the Java memory might give out and the game crashes, even LB warns about it happening. It's not too big of a deal but I'm happy at 64x and if you're not gonna make the jump to 256x then 64x works great.

Have you tried allocating more memory to java? Is your java version 64bit? 64bit works wonders on 64 bit OS.

The 128 I used a while back was: http://www.minecraft...s-arid-pack-76/
^ It has a temp fix near/on the last page to work with 1.7
And the 64 that I currently use is: http://www.minecraft...k/page__st__320
^ Not yet at 1.7 (but should be soon)

More than just wonders. Fixed every problem I ever had with Minecraft.
