So, my question is in the thread title. I've been using a texture I made for a bit now, but got tired of it. It's just like stone bricks anyways, but I'm wondering how one makes good looking cobblestone. I might just end up making some more even ones again, but I'm not sure if I can do that and keep them looking nice and interesting.
I've been editing one of Doku's RPG textures (the stone one, specifically) for use as cobblestone, and I don't think it came out too bad. Here's a gallery with five pictures of what I did, two of them of my furnace as that uses a mostly unmodified version of my old cobblestone texture on the top. I'm working with 64x textures, but any hints or suggestions in general would be helpful, as well as feedback on the texture I'm working on specifically.
Huh, is that the stone from dokucraft modified to look like cobble? I thought it could look good as cobble.
It does look good, yes.
I like your old texture better, though, since it seems to fit the style of your pack much better.
I really dont know how to help you with your question, but i like your cobble texture because its bricks, but not 100% clean bricks.
I have absolutely NO experience with 64x64 packs...but personally before I started getting into texture packs and whatnot, I would edit the default to my liking. Nothing to drastic, but what I did with the cobblestone a few times is either completely smudge it around so it is just a little darker than regular stone, but has the same general appearance.
Or, I'd make a brick looking object out of it.

First make a dark background and make a simplified version of your texture. From there on, continue to add more detail. You should also make sure your edges are the same size on the opposite sides, so that the texture complements other textures of other cobblestone blocks, and not squary like the default texture.
