Do texture packs affect splashes?

Basically, if I include an alternate splash.txt in my pack, will it affect them, or do I have to modify the vanilla .jar file to change them?

Also, is there any formatting involved in the splash.txt file? I included one with one test splash, but it didn't affect anything.

No. You have to edit the .jar for that.

Is there a list of the things that a texture pack can change naturally? So I don't have to keep asking questions like this?
