I wanted to challenge myself to convey maximum information using minimal resources (Black, white, and very low resolution). All items and materials should (hopefully) be easy to identify and to distinguish from other textures (and preferably not hideous). I made a few exceptions and allowed gray in the gui and certain nonsolid environmental elements for the sake of clarity and/or laziness. There are a few things I haven't been able to decolor, and any advice for those (especially fire and portals) would be appreciated.
Bad fire! No cookie!
This pack works very well in low-light areas and underwater due to the high contrast, and I imagine some colorblind players might appreciate a texturepack that removes all need for color in identifying textures. Unfortunately, in open spaces the contrast causes interference patterns that can lead to eye strain after a while. I'm working on a colored version that keeps the same patterns but is easier on the eyes.
Some of the art and wool patterns are inspired by the work of M.C. Escher. Other inspirations for the paintings include black-and-white animals, (lousy) Celtic knotwork, and old-timey cartoons (I included a semi-helpful key in the art folder). While much of this pack is original, the paintings are largely derivative, the water and some of the textures are modified to varying degrees from The Painterly Pack by rhodox, and the lava is modified from the Arabesque pack by AbouBenAdhem (because it's gorgeous and I am, again, very lazy).
I am still hoping to include alternate paintings, cloth textures, and mob skins.
1.8.1 compatible. Biome... erm... not so much. I'm currently working on a 1.9pre4 version. Trying to differentiate all the potions and music disks without color is going to be... interesting...
Changed the name because for some reason people keep posting packs of the original textures run through a desaturation filter...
Looks really nice but wouldn't be something used by a lot of people. I can tell you took the time to make this though and I would suggest putting the pictures up on this post and not just the Planet Minecraft link.
looks nice.Is this an idea or a Work In Progress?
But, If the colour of smooth stone was completely black, It would
make cave exploring quite hard :tongue.gif:
if it is a WIP, then could you post some pictures?

I knew I was forgetting something! :dry.gif:
In my first draft, I forgot to link to the file, so still an improvement.
First time posting anything anywhere in a loooooong time.
Thanks. Also, smooth stone is mostly white. On peaceful mode, I can practically spelunk without a light source.
Well, I'm glad you rew it yourself instead of using an effect on the default textures.
I might use it in the event that I record a Minecraft video and need this effect...
I know it might not look like it, because the theme is so simple, but I spent at least 50-100 hours on this (I wasn't really paying attention) drawing, editing, drawing again, and tweaking things so they would work.
Looking back over it, it's pretty obvious I used Painterly as a starting point for a lot of things, mainly because I think it's a huge improvement over the default textures, so while I made a lot of changes to things I didn't always start from scratch. I didn't really think about it at the time, I just wanted to try something different, make something unique. I didn't think about releasing it for download until later. At least I'm honest about borrowing from other people's work. (And I did check the artist's policy on that before release.)
Anyway, feel free to use this in a video, as long as you remember to credit me with the pack. :smile.gif:
As much as I've enjoyed my grand experiment in communication and design with minimalist means (getting wordy... I think my digital design major is coming back to bite me in the tush...) I'm working on a duotone version using roughly the same textures but adding some color. I'm worried it might end up like the bajillion Wind Waker/spiral/swirly packs out there, but I think some people would be more inclined to try it that way.
So far I think it might be a little too colorful... the color deprivation of making this pack coupled with the effects of working on GroovyCraft (or PsychadeliCraft or whatever I end up calling it) have done weird things to my head. :blink.gif:
Amazing job. I especially love the art. The only problem is that people aren't into this style of art, they look more into fancy colors and all that mumbo crap. Maybe you could make a colored version? Unless you wanted to keep the authenticity, that is..
This is a good pack.. such an innovative idea, pity it sees so little love.
There are a few things I haven't been able to decolor, and any advice for those (especially fire and portals) would be appreciated.

The sizes I'm not sure if they matter, but the examples I found to get those filenames had the fire at 32x640 and the portal at 64x2112.
As for redstone still glowing red there is a mod which may aid: Coloured Redstone mod but its still on 1.7 at the mo.

This is a full texture replacement with no color at all, and very little gray.
Planet Minecraft (Almost forgot that part...)
