lets try to keep this simple. (all 3 pics are taken at the same time, with no change in number of torches in the room)
this is how the game looks with the default textures:
then this is how it looked with the first version of my texture pack: (makes it less bright for some reason, redstone torch texture is a tiny bit brighter)
and this is how it looks with the second version of my texture pack: (general brightness looks normal, but redstone torch texture is too bright)
When you adjusted the brightness/contrast on the smooth stone in the third picture, you adjusted everything's brightness/contrast. Therefore, everything was lightened.

i didnt change any smooth stone. i did add the cobble from beta 1.7 in the third picture, but i never touched the brightness of the terrain.png.
