Updated (6/30/2011 1:30a) - The following things are now complete:
terrain.png
menus
in game GUIs
items.png
sun, moon, pumpkin silhouette
particles
This still leaves (besides bug fixes, changes, and tweaks) the following things not done:
fire (besides torches and smoke)
complex blocks like signs, carts, and boats
monsters
Updated (6/29/2011 2:00a) - Renamed DwarfCraft to Syscraft to avoid confusion with Bukkit plugin. Also, added additional screenshots that show new version of tools, new glowstone coloring, smoke particle effect, and main menu. Oh, and the font...
Updated (6/28/2011 8:00a) - Added more screenshots of other things from my SMP server, most notably things built by lifesnerd, Suzakku, and Itchyhoof.
Older Screenshots (some elements have changed or been completed since these were taken):
The art style is nice, it's a horrible texture pack by normal standards (the variety of the pixels, etc.) but if you're trying to be creative with "that" simple art style, it actually nice, keep it up!
It is pretty ugly to only have the two colors and to have to use a text symbol for each block; I'm finding the tools to be particularly difficult. Here's an example of what Dwarf Fortress looks like:
I think it would make a much more interesting pack if you were in fact to keep it true to the game, ie keeping the backgrounds black.
I can find and post some screenshots of that version, but its terrible. The probably is that black doesn't show any lighting, so you really can't differentiate shapes at all anymore. It looks closer to a bad matrix rip off than anything else.

I've updated the post with additional screenshots of the text pack.
Personally, I find the texture pack to be pretty freaking awesome.
Especially when you consider that the main concept deprives of ASCII characters.
I myself love simplicity, and I think you've done very well so far.
And please don't make the background black. That would look awful. Really.
Oh, and by the way, there's already a rather popular Bukkit Plugin called DwarfCraft that exists, just saying.

@Vazkii
I absolutely disagree. I feel like this is more a technically artistic texture pack, but nonetheless a "download worthy" one, I feel like the variety of colors as well as the symbols constantly give the eyes something new to look at. Its very different, but if you look at different and scream "terrible!" then you'll get nowhere. Love it man, keep it up!
Some of the items look reasonable, but I am rather displeased with the tools thus far. I expect they'll see some changes. Unfortunately, there's very few characters that have a strong top-right to bottom-left diagonal in them...

Thanks for the support. I agree, somehow in the simplicity of ASCII something positive appeared. Also, I'll come up with a different name than Dwarfcraft for the texture pack to avoid confusing with the Bukkit plugin.

I suppose I should ask more specific questions if I'm looking for more specific feedback:
Are the glowstone blocks obvious? I inset the glow in dark red as netherrack is currently dark red.
Thoughts on the pine/spruce leaf texture? I may change from from using a guillemet to using something else; perhaps a double quote?
Any colors overly out of place? I think I'm going to change the color of diamond, for example.
The pine needles I find very satisfying to the eyes. It makes sense. Good idea with the ! torches. I'm just wondering though, You asked about if the glowstone blocks obvious. On the contrary... I can't seem to see any of them Lol. And I look forward to seeing the netherrack. Post pictures please! :biggrin.gif:
Updated the original post with additional screenshots showing off most recent updates. Also, renamed DwarfCraft to Syscraft to avoid confusion with the (out of date) Dwarfcraft bukkit plugin.
Updated the main topic again. Released the first beta of Syscraft so I can hopefully get more feedback from the forums. Anything from symbol choice, colorization, suggestions (especially towards how to do any of the remaining textures) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I will say this, it is a very different style of a texture pack. I don't particularly like it, just because of some of the colors being very different in contrast and color inside of a single block. But seeing what you are striving for, I think that you are off to an impressive start! Hope you find luck.

Are there any particular blocks you'd point at as overly contrasting, or even any blocks that's colors stand out too much from the rest?

Curse PremiumConceptual rules: all blocks must be a minimal number of flat colors, be ASCII based and Dwarf Fortress inspired.
