Today I'm starting to create my own private texture 'pack', but I would like some tips and techniques for giving 'depth' to my textures. That is to say, I want them to actually look textured, as opposed to too uniform in color. As an example of my poor technique, I made a HK-47 skin a few weeks back, but it was uniform in color and thus looked 'flat'. Take the forum site bg, for instance: It's patterned to look like it has cleavage. Any tips for patterning in general that will give my textures some 'pop', as opposed to 'flatness'?
Shadows. From the middle section the barrel get's darker and darker, then get's lighter as it reaches the middle section of the top, and so on all the way around.
