I see a lot of people asking for the default items and terrain sheets still, with no real thread to easily access them. So I, being of bored mind, decided to do the "not so hard" work and make a thread.
I will update this as many times as Notch and Co. updates them...
:tongue.gif:
To do this yourself, simple download/use Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net, or rock and chisel (if you still roll that way).
1. Locate your Minecraft bin folder and open it. (Win XP = C:, documents and settings, username, application data, .minecraft, bin folder)
2. Extract the files from the minecraft.jar (terrain.png from the main directory, items.png from the "gui" folder)
To re-size
1. Open the files in your editor
2. Choose to re-size the image (not the canvas). Each program will have a slightly different method. GIMP uses "Image/scale image"
3. Re-size by doubling the current resolution (512 is enlarged to 1024 for example)
4. Make sure the method you use to re-size is "nearest neighbor" otherwise it will blur the textures.
5. "Save as" (whatever name you want. I use "original16", "original32", and so on) the new size so you can save the default template.
Fully labeled terrain file made by Copperdomebodha (may or may not be 1.6 ready...I will update when I can) ---> Get it here!
This is pretty handy templates but how bout the Default Portal Textures for the Hd Patcher?
Like Custom_portal.png using the default Portal Textures :tongue.gif:
I've been looking for them but can't seem to find them anywhere o-o

default water, lava and portal are too deep in minecraft code :/
Umm ok...
Well I couldn't hurt to ask anyway :tongue.gif:
Thanks fer tellin me. XD
when I get a chance, I can do that for you and anyone else that wants them. I'll use the default textures for all (water, lava, portal) to make them custom animated. Give me a bit though...still getting settled and finding more steady 9real life) work.
Updated the OP with a link to Copperdomebodha's labeled terrain thread. If I get a chance, I will do my own and at it to the OP and keep it updated as well

Try specifying that M$ Paint will NOT work because they are too lazy to make it support transparency, but they're giving it all these fancy brushes that only do anything "productive" in computer "tutorials" given by 1st-3rd grade computer lab "teachers".
Paint.net is BEAST. (No, that doesn't sound right to me, either...where have we gone with slang nowadays...)
Thanks for doing this! I'm just about done with my 64x64 pack. And was thinking about making it in 128 also after I'm done with the 64 version. Nice to have these converted already, Thank you!!!

I never recommend MS paint...nor will I mention it (oops..I did).

I had a full 32x template out if you want me to make the other full templates (as in a pack instead of just items and terrain.)I will. But as said before should be stickied. 'Bout time someone made one of these.
Does the same process count for everything? Mobs, Armor, Paintings, etc?
It does for the defaults using "nearest neighbor" when re-sizing. Most others create a feint edge that throws off the dimensions (to the eye mostly) in my experience and possibly due to them being above 16x16 pixels. So any default image should be easily scalable.
Note that some images can be scaled and used at a higher size (mobs, items...to name a couple) for better detail. Some don't like totally realistic mobs in a more "pixelated" pack however.

See, I'm asking because I plan on making a texture pack myself someday, and I think I finally have the inspiration for it and I want it to be a 32x texture pack... So I'm trying to get a good feel for all the work I'm going to need to do.

Totally linking to this from my tutorial, brilliant idea to take most of the confusing (for new texture makers, anyway) work out of texture packing.
See the post for a Texture pack tutorial!
