The terrain.png is inside your minecraft.jar file. You can find that by going to:
1. Search %appdata%
2. Go into .minecraft
3. Go into bin
4. Right click minecraft.jar and open with 7zip or winrar or another kind of archiver.
5. You should look through it and you can find terrain.png and every other image file.
You can google 7zip and install it if you don't have an archiver.
