Okay...I'm trying to make an adventure map, but want a custom texture pack to go along with the map. I've looked up videos about editing the textures themselves, and I think I have a grasp on it, but what I don't know is how to make my texture pack optional on my own game. All the videos I've seen seem to make the texture pack permanent instead of being able to select if from the texture pack screen on the menu. I know you can download zip files of texture packs and put them in a folder to use, and I basically want to know how to do that. If anyone can give me some helpful pointers, that would be much appreciated.
Texture packs are just a folder in a certain layout, and then zipped. For starters, take a terrain.png out of a texture pack the size you want (16x16, 32x32, etc.), make some modifications, then put it in a new folder. Name this folder what you want your texture pack to be named. Then zip the folder (I recommend 7-zip if you don't have something to do this with). Then just place that folder in your .minecraft/texturepacks/ folder.
Just make sure you don't use Microsoft Paint to make textures. Use something that supports transparency (Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net).
My suggestion is not to make a simple pack. We have enough of those already. You can still make 16x16 packs or higher, but please put some effort into it, people love effort in textures. For instance look at Misa and Doku.
