So I decided i would try my hand at a texture pack. What i tried to do was to improve the overall look of minecraft without changing the feel. It is unfinished, mind you, but tell me what you think.
This is a great start! I love the grass and dirt--very minecrafty, but better. The smooth stone is very nice...but it's missing something. Maybe a dash of color? or make it a little brighter? Though in my opinion, ores should look like ores. The patterns look pretty good for being patterns...but still.
Amazing planks! And...is that the chest above it? It looks like a block of iron. Are you trying to make it look like a safe? Actually...that's a really good idea for a chest. And the torches...hmmmm. They look like they're encased in metal. If that was what you were going for, it's all good, I would suggest editing the ember in particles.png so it'll match a little better. If it's not what you were going for, I dunno what to tell you.
Anyway, keep up the good work. This is one of the best tex. packs i've seen that still keeps to the vanilla minecraft feel.
I am ecstatic that someone thinks it looks good so far.
About the chest: its supposed to look like a metal box, but i was also thinking about making it a safe, im still not sure. Regarding ores, I don't like them too much, and was thinking of changing them into actual ore looking things.
Also, keep in mind that this is ALL from scratch. 100%.
Wow, this is great! I can't wait to see it when it's done! Bookmarked!
I really like the simple-yet-complex look of some of the textures. though I would go with ore-like ores, instead of patterns.

Thats two people for ore like ores. I think i know what has to be done :wink.gif:
If i were to do oresque ores, they would not be templates with differant colors. They would look more realistic and less like patterns, but each ore would be unique. If you were colorblind, than once you find out which ore is which it should not be a problem :smile.gif:
Also, i'll keep the pattern ones in unused squares in the terrain.png as alternates :smile.gif:
for futher elaboration, and just to get my thoughts down:
Gold- small nuggets embedded in the rock.
Iron- streaks of silver and brownish orange.
Coal- smaller and differant looking streaks of black.
Redstone- not sure, considering its not real lol.
Diamond- a big ol' diamond embedded in the rock.
Lapis- streaks, as big as iron, but differant looking.
tell me if these loose discriptions sound okay, if you want.

Might I suggest you try varying the tilt on the lines in the rail corner? At the moment you have perfectly diagonal lines at points that aren't perfectly diagonal, and it looks odd. Try using two pixels next to each other, then staggering to another two pixels, rather than only using a 45 degree diagonal line. Otherwise, this is a good start.
It looks cool, only advice I can give you; Give the sidegrass a faint drop shadow on the dirt, to make it looks more like it's not just copy-pasted on the dirt.
WHATS DONE:
Grass
Smoothstone
Wood
Dirt
Ores
Redstone torches
Torches
Rails (meh)
Chests (single)

Make the ores look like cats? =P
Well, i mean i assumed it was obvious :tongue.gif:
Maybe he could keep them as alternate ores?
