This thread is old, and Ashencraft has undergone some serious changes as of late. I've come to realize I'm not as dedicated of a texture artist as some others out there and I frequently find myself drifting off to do other things. I've been working on Ashencraft for the better part of a year now. My boyfriend has actually threatened to strangle me on more than one occasion because I've deleted textures and done them over so many times, heh.
Anyway, please follow the link below to the new thread for Ashencraft. It's a bit more suited to the spirit of the pack - a slow going, free-flowing compilation of everything I've done thus far. Thanks to everyone who followed this thread and helped it along!
Link coming soon.
============================================================================================================= Ashencraft is back on the forums! I took a very, very long break from posting here and I apologize for not saying something to those who were interested in watching the pack progress. Between my family life, work, and just general busy-ness I didn't really have much time as I would have liked to work on Minecraft and the texture pack.
But, the good news is that I have been working on the pack little by little! I am extremely happy to be able to bring you guys the newer version of the pack! It has changed tons over the course of the past couple of months. As I was playing and fiddling around with it, I found that my textures were simply too dark. It was ridiculously hard to see at night or in dark areas and it made cave diving a complete headache.
So, I decided to change the direction that my pack was going in but keep the general feel the same. My main goals with the style and feeling of my pack are (and have always been):
No overwhelming, bright colors. With the first version, this meant dark colors. Through experience I have learnt that de-saturated colors work much better for the game, and I'm enjoying this style just as much.
Keeping the original Minecraft feel. I have no intentions of redesigning items into something that they're not. I want to keep pumpkins looking like pumpkins, mossy cobblestone looking like cobblestone with moss on it, etc.
Anyway, without further adieu, I present to you some of the newly revamped textures featured in Ashencraft! I will update as I am able, but my life is still somewhat hectic and so new posts with screenshots and information may be a bit more sparse than previously.
These are 100% hand-drawn textures made by me. :smile.gif:
As usual, always check the latest posts for brand new screenshots! The screenies here are really only going to showcase large, group photos mostly. Individual shots of each texture will be released in new posts on this thread periodically.
New dirt and new side snow!
New water and new wild grass!
New cobblestone and new mossy cobblestone!
New chest and TNT!
New wood planks!
Torches, chest (single and double), furnace, and crafting table!
As always, these textures are 100% a WIP and will more than likely change later.
Textures that are not my creation in these screenshots are from JohnSmiths' pack and are serving as placeholders.
Remix Policy
I've had a few people ask me what my policy on remixes is/will be. Everyone is allowed to use my textures to make remix packs for personal use only. I also have no problem with people using my textures in remixes released to the public as long as the following conditions are met:
- You MUST contact me and tell me that you are using my texture(s) (and which ones) in your remix.
- You MUST wait on my reply to that message before posting it.
- You CANNOT ask for donations for that remix pack.
- You MUST supply credit in your thread.
- Absolutely no posting the remix pack outside of http://www.minecraftforum.net.)
- Please don't use more than 5 of my textures in a single pack.
this looks like it will be great! fantastic inspirations as well. My critique so far would be that grass on top is a bit to contrasted, which means over large areas it get very splotchy, perhaps have less variation in the tone. That and the side grass looks more like its overhanging the side of the dirt rather than growing over it, i think its cause there is a harsh shadow under the side grass on the dirt.
the cobble looks great but I'm especially fond of the stone texture.
cant wait to have another great 32x32 pack out there. best of luck.
Calahagus - Heh, they are wonderful! Thanks so much. :smile.gif:
dorianGREY - Thanks for the critique! I was especially happy with the stone as well! As far as the half grass goes - that was sort of my intent. To have it hanging over the side rather than just popping out. I'll play around with it some more, as what's in my head may not be transferring correctly to everyone eles.
And about the grass: I'm not sure what you mean by splotchy. I'll take a look at a large, flat expanse of grass to try to find it. I will play with the contrast!

how to explain it better.... hmmmm...
here goes. I obviously haven't had a chance to run over your terrain.png but I can make my point by using one of your inspirations johnsmith. If you look at his grass (top of the block that is) the grayscale image has great detail in it that gives it a grassy feel, but you will notice its extremely faint, it doesnt need to stand out, there is barely any contrast in the hues of gray that exist in his grass block, but as im sure you know it has a great feel when you look at it in the world, without looking too plain.
so i guess my niggle im getting at is that there is quite harsh darker patches in your grass that give it detail, but are too contrasted from the rest of the grass. perhaps just try lowering the contrast.
this is just my opinion though, and it is a very fine line away from being as good as your inspirations work. I want to see it flourish to be on par or even better.
Ahh, I see what you mean about the grass! I will dull down the blacker parts of the texture. Thanks for that point!
And about the spoiler images: I figured it'd be better to have a compact list rather than a ridiculously long OP thread filled with screenshots (since that's what this entire thread is going to be for now). :smile.gif: Once I get lots more, I'll probably just move them to an album and provide a link.

not a problem, as I said, I want to see this flourish. Also I would recommend when you get a few more textures that you use the texture pack preview world to show of a screenshot of your textures and have that visible on in the OP. Im definitely not a fan of links to albums.
at the moment though I like the pictures in spoilers, It is great for slow connections and I can just preview one at a time.
I do see on the to do list you wish to change the ores. Here is some ideas, take them or leave them. make them ore veins (again see johnsmiths gold ore in 7.3) make them look embedded into the rock, this doesnt mean harsh shadows, it means proper blending and shading.
also, variation for ores is important (which I'm sure you were planning on) but having them all look aesthetically like different ores is important to me.
Hmmm, this looks like a great start! Awesome work! :biggrin.gif:
I agree with the idea of changing th ores, no offence, they do look pretty... yea... They seem to be a bit too bright for the rest of the textures and having the same shape for all of the different ores makes them seem a lot less appealing.
Thanks all for the comments! I absolutely agree with everyone about the ores needing a makeover. I'm already in the middle of recreating the ores. :smile.gif: I'm having one heck of a time trying to figure out what to do with gold, but I've finished most of the others and will update the thread as soon as I'm done with complete ore package!

Edit: I have updated with new ores!
If this is truly dark then this could be an awesome texture pack. Is looking good so far.
I'm definitely trying to make it dark, but not gothic. There won't be skulls or bones decorating things. I want it to have its own theme, and dark seemed like an appropriate tag for it. :smile.gif: I plan on making the mobs quite...creepy, though.
Think subtle creepy. The only example that I can show right now would be to notice the way the half grass hangs over the edge in a droopy, jagged manner.

mate, love the new ores, MUCH better.
more critique about them if you want it. the gold could be a touch more gold, it seems a bit banana yellow, perhaps adding some deeper yellow shades into it would look good. The iron also looks like it floating on the rock, I would rather see it embedded. the lapiz looks bloody brilliant, wow (im not sure if its the lighting but it does look a touch purple, if its artistic license then that cool it still looks great). coal is great, I was going to mention not to change that. Diamond looks great but feels unbalanced on the block having so much at the bottom, I think In a group of 3 or more it would look a bit odd, but I could be wrong, its hard to tell without seeing it in game obviously. Overall the new ores look great mate, very impressed.

Dorian, as always, your input is invaluable! I totally see what you mean about the Lapis being purple and the gold being too yellow. I'm changing them ASAP. I'm also removing the red haze from around the Redstone. It just looks awkward to me the more I look at it. I'm also going to attempt to embed the iron into the stone more. It does look floaty! The diamonds I'm going to leave for now. I don't really see the asymmetry as a problem (I don't want all of my ores to be completely symmetrical and centered for some reason), but I will definitely keep an eye on it. My tastes tend to change, heh.
Thanks again for your help and for the compliment!

I'll add a "To Do" list and a "Recently Finished" list that I'll update daily. You can rest assured that I'll be working on this every day, though!

The only thing I can say is that I'd mix up the ores a bit. They're currently all recolors.
Everything else looks stunning though, keep up the good work!
