I was interested on which people prefer, photorealistic, or hand drawn textures. In this thread photorealistic refers to the fact that it was made by editing actual pictures. Honestly, I don't know what other will be used for, but I like putting it there just in case.
I wouldn't want to play something that is about cubes with super realistic graphics. (Hence why I don't use HD texture packs)
Exactly. I think HD packs look ridiculous, especially with realistic animal-textures: just because the textures are high-resolution, slapping them on a bunch of cubes won't make the game look any more realistic.
The VERY best I've seen are hand drawn 32's, and I love what beauty folks are able to create in the limits of 16. "photorealistic" anything in minecraft is just a non-starter because it all looks so bizzare and jagged pasted onto those big blocks. Never works, IMO.
But I actually voted "Other" because what folks have been able to do stylistically with 64x and up (like the Windwaker pack) is just gorgeous and I see a lot of unexplored potential there.
32px seems to be the best in my opinion. JohnSmith, Dokucraft, DustyCraft, etc. I feel they go a lot better with the game than most 16packs or any HD realistic pack. 64+ hand drawn are also good (like bordercraft) but they take a lot more skill to make them fit well into the game.
I love hand drawn, but I also gotta give credit to the nice, photorealistic ones since it's not just copy paste things since they have to make them tile well. They also have to undergo manipulation. But in the end, as a painter myself, definitely hand drawn. Takes more skill, time, creativity, hard work and own ideas on that. :]
I prefer 32x hand drawn, myself. I don't really want that realistic a look for Minecraft when I play it, I want something at least somewhat cartoony. One of the only realistic-ish packs I've used thus far has been Misa's, which I find to be a nice middleground between cartoony and realistic.
It just looks odd living in a voxelworld and having everything look super photorealistic to me, I guess. Beyond that the world itself, model wise, doesn't look that realistic, they tend to cause tiling issues the more realistic looking they are. I've seen some of the higher end photorealistic packs make their stone -extremely- smooth looking to avoid this, but then I just find myself wandering about a big hall of grey.

Java is bulky, slow, hogs resources, passes out from exhaustion, and although it was big in the 90's is now typically only found on poorly designed websites. Much like Harry Knowles. So any time Minecraft crashes, blame Java.
I hate photorealistic HD packs with a passion. Most of them are just copypastas of textures found on Google and whatnot. The only one I like is LB's Photo Realism, because it actually looks good.
So with that, I'll have to say hand-drawn 32x. Not all 32x packs look nice though *coughmixcraftcough*, usually just the ones that are copypasta textures, but ones like GeruDoku, DokuCraft, JohnSmith, etc. look stunning.
I do like 16x texture packs a lot though. Painterly Pack, jolicraft, etc...I even like the default textures, unlike a lot of people I know. Keeping the blocky feel of Minecraft with the textures is the most important thing a texture pack creator can do, and 16x packs usually retain the blockiness just fine. :biggrin.gif:
To be fair, it's pretty difficult to make a photorealistic 16x pack. I've never seen a photo of size 16x16 and think, "My, that's some sexy dirt right there"
My textures are very commonly confused* with 0.000256 megapixel cameraphone photos. And my dirt is crying now because of you.
There's always a middle ground I feel, for example you can have an HD texture pack that is mostly hand-drawn...just hand-drawn really well. That is generally what I've done. Photoshop, armed with just the brush tool can do wonders (and skill ofc). HD packs generally just give a different feel then more cartoony packs. I don't agree with full-on hate at one kind of pack or another, you don't have to look at it if you don't want :tongue.gif: You can have HD cartoony packs... o.O
Is there a label for hand-drawn yet realistic packs? ( a bit rhetorical)
Well since I hand drew all my 16x texture packs, I voted for that, but you should really have a spot for hand drawn 64x packs. Ovo's pack deserves to be mentioned!
Hmmmm, thinking about it a bit more, I basically just like hand drawn packs, no matter the size...
Wasn't there like a 128x128 hand drawn pack ages back? Like Brocraft or something. I remember is was handdrawn, super-detailed, and one of the higher resolutions, but haven't seen it since. Shame too, looked nice, and I'm on a laptop that can handle the higher end packs.

Example:
Minecraft is great with the blocky feel. (<--edit: was missing a period O.O)
Gears Of War is great with realisic.

Same for the vice versa.

I can't comment on 256x or 128x because I can't run them properly on my computer.
