Well, I have decided to make an Hd texture pack, mainly because I cant find one that has everything I want. the problem is, I dont know how to do that. here is a list of my objectives:
1. make a 256x256 texture pack
2. make the pack with custom lava and water
3. make it with custom mobs (maybe)
4. learn how to update it for each version of minecraft.
this is what i need help with. I have the basic programs needed (winrar, gimp, and Mcpatcher 2.0), but do I need any other programs? I saw a video from 3 months ago on youtube on how to make an hd pack, but he used the old McPatcher. do I need to download the old version? would it be easier to use another texture pack as the base, such as Lb Photo realism 256x256? is it possible to convert an existing 64x4 pack into my own 256x256? also, how would I update it to work with each new version of mc? would I extract the new minecraft.jar, and then paste my old images onto it, and then change whatever new items there are, or does it also take some formatting? also, in school, I took a course on photoshop, so I am pretty fluent with that program, but this is the first time using gimp, so any advice for using gimp would also be welcome.
You're totally overthinking this, it's not that hard. That video from 3 months ago uses the old patcher because that was the up to date one; always use the most up to date patcher.
I suppose it would be easier to use another HD pack as a base, but try not to end up copying ideas from the pack. Converting 64x to 256x would mean resizing everything, but I suppose it's possible.
And updating is way easier than you're describing (or maybe you're just describing it weird): just add the new blocks/items in their respective places on the png, and add any new files. For instance, if you were to update a 1.5 pack to 1.6, you'd simply edit in your tall grass and hatches etc. onto the terrain.png, add maps the to items.png, and add files like the map background and icons, and watercolor.png.

1. are texture packs backwards compatible? example: the server I play on uses around 15 plugins, so it takes a while to update the server. right now we are still in 1.5.01. could i use the 1.6.6 version of LB Photo, since it has all the item images already, and still be able to test it, or do texture packs work for that version only?
