alright, but is there like a blank slate template i can use to make things easier?
Just use the vanilla textures as a template. If you want a template for 32x32, resize the image from 256px256px to 512px512px (Make sure the resampling is set to nearest neighbor, otherwise it will be blurry).
I would love to see a texture pack creation tool/kit that allows you to edit/create textures and view them [in real time] in game or [as they would look in game] around the 3D model as you're editing them.
I feel like that sounds confusing.
Imagine you're editing the COW texture in an MSPaint style program, but to the side is a 3d rendering window, showing you the cow in real time and the changes you're making AS YOU MAKE THEM.

This would be awesome. Honestly I would love to tackle such a venture but I'm only in my first C++ class.

Uncheck "Mantain aspect ratio".
