I don't know that happened to me not so long ago when I was trying to use Pie texture pack. The dirt is black, the only thing I could think of would be a block that doesn't load right, but it's dirt which is actually plugged in. I really don't have an explanation for you.

The problem would be that you are using 1.6 version of Minecraft and trying to load a 1.5 texture pack. You need the patcher progtam about three posts up.
