So, I decided to get back to work on my own texture pack. I used my own texture pack exclusively until 1.4 with no issues. After the release of 1.4 I got too busy to update the pack and stopped work on it, so it hasn't been updated for a while. The following are the steps I went through and the results I got.

For reference, I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 and am on a Mac running OSX 10.5.

Test #1:

Went into Library > Application Support > minecraft > bin
Copied minecraft.jar
extracted the files from minecraft.jar
Opened up terrain.png in Photoshop
Copied my images from the old texture pack
Pasted
Merged down to one layer
Saved it as terrain.png in a new folder
Compressed into a .zip
Put .zip in texturepacks folder
Opened minecraft
Go to "mods and texture packs"
Icon is greyed out
Doesn't work if tried

Test #2:

Downloaded another texture pack
Dropped it in texturepacks
Works

Test #3:
Decompressed the texture pack from Test#2
Made small edits
Recompressed, with all the same file still there
Go to "mods and texture packs"
Icon is greyed out
Doesn't work if tried

I checked, I'm compressing things the right way as far as I can tell, but every experiment where I edit the image gives me an unusable texture pack. I've tried using the HD texture patch to make it work, I've tried everything.

I feel like I'm making a simple mistake but I don't know what it would be.

What, pray tell, am I doing wrong?

I figured this out right after posting.

I'm not sure what's changed, but apparently I had to compress the files in a new way than I have been.

I'm going to blame my compression program and me being too dumb to notice it wasn't behaving the way the old one did.
