I downloaded a texture pack and it is all greyed out but i dont know why

If you mean the gray icon, that's just the default icon for packs that don't provide their own.
Try clicking the pack to select it and then loading your game to see if it worked.
(Most packs don't change the main menu screen art so you can't see if they worked till you actually start up a game.)
