In the massive change log that Notch just posted for 1.6 was one small line that filled me with some joy.
* Fixed grasscolor.png and foliagecolor.png not being read from texture packs
This means no more telling people to use the HD patcher on some of my non-HD packs just to get around that bug.
Mind you he didn't mention watches or compasses so dunno if those got fixed at the same time or not. (Was the same sort of bug but with Notch we can never be too sure.)
We also still have the bug of hard-coded pine and birch leaf colors though so I'm not quite as happy as I could be but simply not having packs like Mooncraft being flat-out broken visually without either using the HD patcher or copying those files into minecraft.jar by hand is a step up.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
It's certainly an impressive list of additions and fixes!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can only see the following 3 items that will need some didgerydoodling texturewise to fit each of our texture packs:
Added craftable maps
Added hatches
Added tall grass in some biomes
Is the 'tall grass' Notch beginning to implement some kind of Wild Grass?
Yes, some recognition of all the hardwork put in by xau and kahr over the months, that have undoubtedly contributed to the success of Minecraft would be nice. The Patcher is such an integral part of a sizeable portion of the Minecraft community's enjoyment of the game, it really should be in there now.
Notch should just implement the HD Patcher into the game :/
Agreed. Who cares if he likes HD or not, he should give us the choice and not force us to rely on unsupported mods. Either that or he needs to hurry up and start supporting mods. I suspect all these bug fixes are going to give the modding community fits as they try to update their stuff to work with 1.6.
