Hello ladies and gentlemen of the forums.
Allow me to present to you the Ruston texture pack. This pack started as a simple task of fixing a few repeating default textures. It soon spiraled into a complete texture overhaul, but the goal in mind was clear - keep the MC feel. I've been working on this pack for at least a few weeks now (on and off) and, although its not yet complete, I feel I can share it with the community.
What I have finished thus far:
-terrain.png
-most tools/weapons
-armor
-art pack (gathered from various sources)
NOTE: Clouds and weather taken from Painterly until I make my own.
UPDATES:
5/20/2011 Added an image of the armor I've made so far.
Here are some visuals:
The textures
The town of Ruston. We know how to live.
Our town symbol and town hall. The doors look a lot more inviting.
Pixelated nature never looked this good
A little Zen Garden. Time to relax.
Our tavern complete with bar stools and fire place. Note the bookshelves. (And yes, that is a Companion Cube)
A look at our shoreline at night (note the Sandstone temple of the Great Lost Noob)
Our town dock. Yes, we pretty much put our banner on everything
A roller coaster. Note the bunker-like iron door and light wood perfect for all that "non-shabby" construction
A fancy house
Another fancy house
More of the (fancy) house
Relax by the fire place
The caves. The obsidian is probably the biggest change you will see, because, damn it, water and lava DOES NOT make purple rock! :biggrin.gif:
Welcome to HELL
Once you see whats in the soul sand, it's already too late

===================== Here is the terrain.png, for those who do not wish to download the full pack.
Want to help me improve the pack? Great. Tell me your 2 favorite textures, your 2 least favorite textures, and tell me why you picked em. Also feel free to make suggestions and requests. I will continue updating this pack either way, but I'll get more done with input from you good folks.
You want feedback, you say? Well then, here you go.
I like the light wood, it sure give an un-shabby look. I like the Ruston Banner. The obsidian looks nice, and your damn right, water and lava doesn't make purple stone.
What I didn't like; Nothing. This pack is epic. Awesome. Can't believe this is your first. You can't tell. Lots of kudos!
For a second there, thought you were gonna be super critical. Thank you for your deceptively kind words.
O.O
Epic!
I'm using this as my simple alternative to painterly now. Best simple pack I have seen.
You should make a custom block breaking thing though. You should also upload it to http://www.2shared.com, because I hate that site with all those pop up adds and the wait to download thing.
First off, well done! This texture pack definitely good. I'd like to suggest and/or help a few things though.
Diamonds, Gold and Iron Blocks
-The Iron looks fantastic but the Diamonds and Gold blocks could possibly look better without the extra dots
-Simple fix Diamond and Gold Blocsks
Door
-The glass aspect is a good idea but may not jive with RPG servers or castles.
-Maybe a circular window or just remove glass?
Signs and Wool
-The signs and wood don't jive, easy fix though.
-Wool is a little harsh with the bright colors, maybe closer color blends?
-Here is an example "Couches/Chairs" and Wool
Good Job With...
-TNT
-Flowers and Mushrooms
-Chests
-Saplings
-Workbench and Furnace
-Bookshelves!
Cobblestone
-I really like your cobble but maybe an alternate?
-I made this bit from taking the stone and simply adding lines Cobblestone
Art
-I love your art!
-The Pickax Banner looked sick! Could you possibly make one with a sword or exedra?
Glass
-The glass looks fantastic!
Obsidian
-Great terrain but it might work/look better on Netherack
-Maybe something more black and sinister? Obsidian Goal
Sand
-I have always loved the idea of waves in the sand but it never seems to jive with its surroundings, which is a huge shame, :dry.gif:
-Maybe something more gritty? That is all I got... :laugh.gif:
WOW! I love that Iron Armor! I also really like the idea of a club for the wooden sword but could the stone sword be more swordy (is that a word?) Just a suggestion :smile.gif:
I am on my laptop right now so I can't use Gimp but a simple/easy way to make a stone sword might be just to erase the handgaurd. This would keep the "unsophisticated" look in comparison to the Iron or Diamond sword.
Actually, i happen to surprisingly like this pack.
And about your "Water and lava do not make purple rock" comment:
"Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.
It is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimum crystal growth."
Taken from wikipedia. Water would, if cold enough, obviously, quickly cool lava.
Edit: The full download of the pack gave me a minecraft.jar in a zip form, with the pack applied. This is illegal as it is distributing Notch's work. Thought you might want to know that.

Thank you kind sir. This is my 1st texture pack, so I'm glad you like it.
SPARTA!AWESOME! It looks really great for a 16X16 texture, and I love the obsidian! Definitely going to download this. Thanks you. Still not getting enough constructive feedback.

Uploading
-I took the liberty of simplifying your download and used Mediafire (a lot less ads :smile.gif: )
-You may notice I took COM and other things out of the download, that way it will not interfere with with anything on MAC computers
-I also edited the pack.txt for you. When you open Texture Packs and Mods in Minecraft you will see RUSTON [V1.5.1] 't want it there than it is very easy to delete :smile.gif: I left Achievements in the folder but you might want to delete it, it interferes with the game.

I hope this helps!
This has been very helpful. Thank you very much for such an insightful post!
Absolutely. Gonna do that right now.

My Ideas:
The Realism Overhaul
Elemental Swords
DAMN YOU LIMITED CHARACTERS!
Fair point. I'll add another option for obsidian that caters more to the traditional.
