I'm just now trying to get into editing texture packs (for personal use only) after reading a lot and seeing fantastic creations out there. I'm having trouble however because my attempts at editing don't seem to be accepted when I put the zip into the texture packs folder.
After some puzzling around and trying to nail down the issue, I eventually tried the following:
1) copy a working texture pack
2) extract to a new folder
3) immediately send back into a zip folder
4) add to the texture packs folder
After doing this, the folder name appears as a mod, but the texture pack is now not accepted and the default textures are shown. Is there some magic parameter for the zip folders that I'm overlooking?
Here's what I would do (worked for me):
1. Copy an existing texture pack and put it in your documents
2. Replace the textures in the existing one with the ones you made
3. Put it in the minecraft texture pack folder
4. voila!
