Oh, I've seen that picture, thought it looked cool too. I don't think this could be done with that kind of detail in 32x, though, it'd probably need to be at least 64x or maybe 128x.
Also, I fail to see why this couldn't be made to look quite similar. It may have tons of shaders and effects, but all they seem to have changed is the look of the textures.
Oh hay, guess what I did: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/28653055/matrix.zip
It is called matrix because I am unimaginative. It's 128x, but it really doesn't look that good. I'm going to see if it looks better or worse if I resize it.
You really can't play with this, but it might be cool for screenshots. It really wasn't difficult to make, just ran it through some filters, messed with the contrast/gamma, and edited the glass a bit.
Edit: Here it is in 64x. You probably could play with this a little better, though you'd still have no clue which ores are which. Obviously it's not as detailed so it doesn't look as good up close, but far away doesn't look like **** so it's a trade off. Here's a screenshot.
Also forgot to say, I've not edited anything other than the terrain.png, but if you wanted other things too you could easily go and grayscale them and they wouldn't look that out of place.

I would like to know if any of you would have fun doing something along the lines of this.
Any takers?
