To find the .minecraft, just search for or run the %appdata% folder. Yes, it needs the %'s.
EDIT:
Just remembered what I used to do. Launch minecraft, go to Mods and Texture Packs, and click "Open Texture Pack Folder". From there, just go to the .minecraft.

edit: make sure you unzip the mod zip/rar and move the files that are inside... most of them have a readme
