I have been working on some art to replace the in-game paintings. I think I've got them just about how I'd like them, and now I have a question about how to put them into the game.
As I don't know how to do anything to the .jar file, I figured that it would be easier to just to drop the .png into a texture pack I've been using (Painterly), (after renaming the .png to match the file I'd removed) but that just locks up the game and I had to delete my .minecraft folder to get the game to work again.
Is there some way of inserting my art via texture pack I'm missing or will I have to figure out the .jar?

Assuming you know the location of the minecraft.jar file, please understand that a .jar file is merely a .zip file under a different name. Rename the extension of the file, expand its contents, and then you will see the resources used in the game.
As you may know, kz.png is the painting file, located in the art folder. You will need to create a new texture pack, or modify a current one by unzipping it and swapping out the kz.png file. Then zip the contents again and place it in your library in the texture packs folder... That should do it... I'm sure others can add more information if I missed anything.
On a related note, I am currently redoing some of the art myself, remaking some of the originals with pixel art methodology (so it looks cleaner/stylized), or replacing the pieces with my original work. Here's a collection of what I've done so far:
