You'll have to create a new image and name it "custom_fire.png" and draw each frame of the fire animation. It's done the same way as custom animated water/lava. Search on google for my tutorial on that.
First I've heard of this...and Google returns no results on your tutorial. Mind sharing?

well if anyone can find anything on this, it would be great, cause im sure more people will want to make their own fire or edit someone elses. is there a specific location of the fire texture animation in the game files?

NOTE: New in this version! Texture packs can now have custom animated fire. Texture pack authors, use the filenames custom_fire_n_s.png (for the north-south sides of the fire block) and custom_fire_e_w.png (east-west sides). The format is just like the other custom_*.png files. Animation speed may be tweaked depending on user feedback.
