If anyone noticed, I threw a small texture pack out here to get some feedback. In the time since then, I've worked quite a bit and improved my skills a lot, and I think I want to try my hand at something bigger than just redoing Minecrafts default textures. I've come up with a few ideas, but I really want to hear what the community wants, as a lot of great stuff, some of which I could never compete with, is already out there.
I was thinking about something along the lines of a architectural pack, as in something that gives a continuous modernized feel to large structures and the world, possible even encroaching on futuristic/sci-fi ground. In other words, something with the same feel that you get when looking at a building like this or this. Of course, if a better or more creative idea is presented I will happily put my effort into that instead.
One last idea I've been throwing around is getting the community involved with a project, possibly even this one. If a common consensus is reached for an idea, then perhaps we can have different artists contribute things that, personally, they can do better that others. I myself, for example, absolutely suck at doing armors, mob skins, anything that involves spreading a texture over more than just a cube. So if someone is better at that than me, then maybe they could contribute some mob skins.
What I really want to accomplish with this is to create something that a lot of people will like and enjoy, and will also get the community involved, because everyone knows how much more satisfying it is to use something in game when you've spent time working on and polishing it. So ideas, critique, concepts, all are welcome here.
since we don't have many options as far as "modern" building material type of packs, with the exception of say moderncraft and a few of us that have/had concrete etc. textures; a dedicated high rez "modern materials" pack would be very nice.
edit: before anyone jumps on me for it...I know there are others but most of them are themed towards apoc times or really dark and unrealistic for modern bright and happy construction.
Heheh, funny you should mention that. The first thought that came to my mind was "We really need an HD version of Moderncraft". Something in 32x or preferably 64x. It's a great idea that would look way better with the proper resolution and a good artist. Doesn't need to be photorealistic, just an alternative to fantasy or apocalypse.

Honestly I don't like most texture packs higher res than 32x, as I think higher resolutions clash with the whole "blockieness" of Minecraft. I think 32x would be a nice middle ground, as it keeps the pixelated style that goes better with the Minecraft world while giving additional detail options that weren't available with 16x. Of course, that's just my opinion, so take it as you may.
And I love the idea of a 32x Moderncraft-flavored pack, but I don't want to just upres that pack. Any idea's for specific block types? Of course wood would be wood, and bricks, bricks.. Maybe smoothstone could be concrete and cobble could be a different size of bricks? I know that isn't groundbreaking, but it's a start. I think while it would be cool to create modern feelings with the standard building blocks, there should be some contrast, so perhaps the wools could be used to give an alternative, perhaps a gothic style?
before I caved and made my wools regular wool, they were all either alternate building materials or decorative blocks. it's a good idea. although I stand behind regular stone being just that..a cave made of concrete just doesn't make any sense.

one thing on this: why not have smelted be concrete, or add to :stone:?
Because smelted cobble is the same material as raw stone. Remember, gdogwoof, we're just talking about changing the appearances here - not actually adding any new recipes or block types.
I agree with Grugsy, leave smooth stone as is - but cobble can make a good concrete if you like. As for the dyed wools - well, that's tricky. On one hand, they make good carpeting. On the other hand, so many of them are so rarely used that you might as well repurpose them. I made tatami mats for some of my wool colors (magenta, lime, yellow, etc) but I left blue and red as is (partly because I have an enormous American flag outside my tower, partly because they are my favorite colors for carpets). And I agree with XSSheep, leave the "native" wool colors alone - nothing stranger than whacking a sheep and having a section of tile fall off or something.
I think the categories of texture types in ModernCraft are a good start. You can always do your own take on them. I'll look that pack over tomorrow and see what comes to mind.

Curse Premiumone thing on this: why not have smelted
