It has a gigantic amount of customizable content, and it's quiet good as well. I used to hate it, but now I started to like it after editing it a bit in Photoshop.
The thing is you spend half an hour or more using the customizing tool and then realize that the pack doesn't look THAT good in game. The colors are not well chosen and they don't go that well with each other and most of the basic blocks like grass, dirt, and stone aren't that great and don't tile well. But most of the other stuff is really great, especially the snow version, as it's all made around a central theme so everything goes well together.
It's not ugly at all. It's quite cool for a 16x16 (you know..back when they didn't used to have all these "plain" 16x16 packs. When they actually took the time to make a 16x16 pack)

Painterly was the first texture pack I used. I think it can look nice with the correct combinations, it's so customisable that you can create some really intresting combinations, like Chinease textures, Modern housing appliances, giant glaciers and more. Rhodox is always adding more content, most people usually never update their packs, let alone giving you choices for multiple furnaces and landscapes. Personally I think its one of the best packs, but thats just my opinion...

Its all in the title why painterly? i noticed that many players here recommend the painterly texture pack... why? why? why?
they recommend it because it is so customizable. it's a good starter pack for first timers.
i think so too, but it is quite ugly tho, i saw better ones, but painterly is well known for the customizer, that's my opinion. but still ugly. i showed it to my friend and he said "OMG HOW UGLYYYYYY" and he forced me to turn it off, but sometimes it's good ;D
painterlys only ugly if you MAKE it ugly. the defaults arent their best options i admit, but it only takes a monkey to make a good selection (just an expression, not to offend any monkeys out there scouring the forums and modding rocket science into minecraft)

No, I'm not some n00b that makes there username have to do with the game they're playing. There were no Endermen in Alpha. N00bs.
Painterlys pretty good. I didnt like it until the side grass had changed to matchh( I <3 u notch). But its annoying when on sites people show off their custom painterly packs and i go: I could make it myself release it and go look at my custom pack i made!!! im so proud of myself!!! derp derp derp!!!!
