Hi, I can't get 256x Texture Packs to load, (LB Photo Realism, HD Minecraft, nothing).
The 128x version of the same texture pack works, but not the 256x.
I'm patching with MCPatcher 2.0 beta 3, running Windows 7 x64.
It'll show the Mojang logo, but after that, crash.
I get an hs_pid_error.
Yes, I'm using Xau's Texture fix (MCPatcher).
I'm on 1.5_01, using 2.0 beta 4 now.
Even increased Java heap size. Still can't run Minecraft with 256x texture pack.

It's your computer, it can't handle 256x256. Mine can only barley handle 64x64.
Either find some sort of professional help, or get a better computer

Like I said, I custom built my computer, I get a solid 60 fps using a 128x, and still run everything else on it, no lag or delay whatsoever. I don't see why I can't run a 256x texture pack. Whenever its selected, Minecraft goes black, and it stops responding.
the issue is the X4 processor...(I know, I have one and have done the research) X4's don't handle atiogl very well because of the way the processor works. so far just about everyone with problems loading LB have been on an X4 with an ati card.
and before anyone gets all technical on me...look it up first...the hours of research I did on google got very redundant..all pointing to the X4.
Well, "replace your otherwise excellent video card" is at least a step in the right direction - though personally, I'd be reluctant to do so for just one game, especially when it's a matter of going down to "just" 128x instead of 256x.
There are plenty of decent 128x packs around (including versions of most of the 256x packs), so biting the bullet and playing at a lower resolution beats shelling out a few hundred bucks for a new video card, IMO.

I'm going to do a controlled experiment with only two variables. Number of PHYSICAL cores, and whether AMD or Nvidia video card. I'll give you guys the result when I'm able to fully pull all the facts.
Radeon HD 5850 Graphics Card
AMD Phenom X4 9750
Windows 7 64 Bit
8GB RAM
It's a custom piece of work, so I doubt my system can't run it...
Oh and im getting Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 1GB PCI Express HDMI Graphics Card do you think that will be good for my 4GB ram and 2.90 duel-core procceser?

Sounds good, you can probably run 64x or 128x with few to no problems. 256x might give you only like, 20 fps with Advanced OpenGL turned off.
Intel Quad physical cores (8 while hyperthreaded) with a Radeon HD 5850 does work when using a 256x texture pack.
So it's most likely just quad core AMD processors that can't handle 256x. Still need to be 100% confirmed...

It's not the processor. I use an AMD quad core (Phenom 9950 2.6 GHZ) and I can run LB PhotoRealism 256x just fine. Takes a moment to load but it works.
So it's definitely not the processor alone. But I'm not using a Radeon video card, I have a GeForce 8800 GTS (640 MB).

Well, that's because you're running a laptop. Most laptops don't have a dedicated video card, and those that do are usually in the 600$+ range for a really good one. When you spend alot of money on a computer and can't run things that should be easily runnable, you just get a WTF moment.

Curse Premiumthis
what are your system specs?

Did you use xau's HD texture fix?

Did you bother to read his specs? He's got a quad-core CPU, 8 gigs of RAM and a video card with 1 GB of onboard VRAM.
That's more than adequate to run any game currently on the market. Your comment is unhelpful considering your own lack of PC hardware knowledge.
Thankfully, Grugsy has a more specific and relevant answer.
